Life Lab Garden Teaching Planning Meeting

Monday, September 24, 2012 3:15-4:30 pm Minutes


Meeting Purpose: To review resources and plans for developing grade level lesson plans and instruction.


Teachers Present: Samira H. (K), Kristen S. (1/2), Laura McF (3/4), Ben P. (5/6),  Terra B. (IS2-6), Lori P (RSP former Life Lab Teacher), Noel B (scribe), Eric B (Principal), Andrea R. (IS Aide) 

Team Volunteers: Paul Richeson- paul@fatcabbagefarm.com (3/4 & 1st/2nd dad) and Rachael Spencer - aspencer@cruzio.com (Production Gardener)

  1. Review class garden time scheduling. View schedule on calendar page
    1. Samira is open to move her day and time especially if that could allow a parent to help out.
    2. Ben would also like a parent helper if possible.
  1. Grade Level Lesson Planning:
    1. Official Life Lab books are based on science curriculum with an emphasis on inquiry based garden learning
    2. Life Lab books are not necessarily aligned with California State Standards, meaning for some grade level standards you will find lessons in different grade level books. Find the standards here https://sites.google.com/site/pacificschoolgarden/lesson-planning
    3. 6th grade does not have official Life Lab books, but there is a draft publication that was never published
  2. Discussion of best ways to document what teachers are doing
    1. Document lesson tips, needs & plans on Google site
    2. Use white board in garden to communicate re: garden tasks
    3. Use Google site for links for Free Lessons https://sites.google.com/site/pacificschoolgarden/lesson-planning
    4. Do both lesson and activity, include journaling. Keeping journals stored in Life Lab shed was discussed.
  3. Instructional Materials needs discussed
    1. Need oven thermometers for soil, compost, etc.
    2. Need to inventory existing supplies and bring supplies for all to use and put in well-marked plastic tubs or shelves
    3. ERIC will buy plastic containers; TEACHERS will inventory and collect materials (hand lenses, pencils, rulers, thermometers, egg cartons, journals, etc.) on Wed., October 3rd from 1:30-4:00 & organize supply shed. 
  4. Bed Assignment Plan - 2 per class
    1. Rachael Spencer will be helping students plant Kale and Lettuce in beds 1-6. She will coordinate Food Lab needs via Emelia Miguel.
    2. Each teacher chose one production bed and one experimental bed and John Fisher put the info on the Google site map. (See map here https://sites.google.com/site/pacificschoolgarden/home) Noel will make big map for the garden, but the beds are already numbered.
    3. #14 Bed is full of mint, so it is designated at the "Herb Bed" and "Tea Bed". John Fisher will get some herb starts to add to that bed.
    4. #13 Bed is designated as the "Cut Flower Bed". We need a morning Monday class to be responsible for bringing fresh flowers to the cafeteria.
  5. School-wide Garden Team Expansion and Communication
    1. John demonstrated how to use Pacific School Life Lab Garden website https://sites.google.com/site/pacificschoolgarden/ for calendar items, wish list items, and communication. A cleaner URL will be coming soon. John can invite site users so they can have access to update the site.
    2. John will help coordinate a Life Lab Team volunteer day on Wed., October 3rd from 1:30-4:00. Noel will advertise it in the memo and include the information that children can stay in Rec. for ½ price if parents are volunteering.
    3. John will try to arrange"Drip Irrigation" seminar for the public to be held at our Life Lab garden, thereby providing a service and possibly funds for the drip irrigation supplies. October 7th or 27th are tentative possibilities.
    4. UCSC Interns must have a specific project and a supervisor. It was decided that we should coalesce what we are doing before we take on an intern project, possibly in the spring.
