Tony Pack's advice

Unfortunately there is at least one large event in Canberra at the same time – 2008 Pacific School Games – that looks like its booking up some of the local accommodation – may be best to get in early!

Probably your best bet is to use the local tourist bureau - http://www.visitcanberra.com.au/ - go to the accommodation page then follow the link under “Making an online booking” – shows most of what’s available.

Other accommodation sites are also worthwhile having a look at – eg. www.lastminute.com.au www.accommodation.com.au www.wotif.com etc.

Some places local to ANU that I’ve used in the past are:

Quest Apartments in Civic (Canberra CBD) – their site shows that they are booked out for 3rd and 4th December (but they are showing up on visitcanberra.com.au ?? so may have some rooms left).

Canberra Motor Village below Black Mountain offers a range of cheaper accommodation – and is not too far away from ANU few minutes by car or taxi, or a half hour walk… um… looks like they’re booked out too!

University House on ANU Campus http://www.anu.edu.au/unihouse/ is good – and very close to all that’s happening… not obvious from the site if they have vacancies – so if someone want’s to give them a try and pass on the info that would be great.

If looking on accommodation sites – the ANU campus is adjacent to Canberra CBD – known as Civic – and the other most likely suburb is Braddon to the north – most places would within 10-15 minutes walk.

Reid and Turner are also close but don’t have much in the accommodation stakes. O’Connor, Lyneham, Dickson and Ainslie are a little further out – Lyneham and Dickson would be at least a 30-40 minute walk. There are fairly good bus services in the inner suburbs – and there are always taxis.

Further to the above, I [Paul Bourke] can confirm that the Uni House has sold out in all room categories on 2 & 3 December. As of today (1 Oct) the following hotels have availability (Options presented by the UWA travel agent). I've booked into the Olims Hotel, not as close as I would like but a good walk in the morning never hurt anyone.
The Olims Hotel - $ 306.00 (total price for 2 nights)
Mantra on Northbourne - $ 386.00
Rydges Lakeside - $ 428.00
Crowne Plaza - $ 440.00
Novotel Canberra - $ 501.00
