Vitamin & Supplement Considerations for MSers
I don't take multi vitamins, I think they're a bit of a scam, if you eat well you should be getting everything you need, though we do definitely need to supplement for some conditions or a severe lack of a particular vitamin. Vitamin D for example is important for people who have Multiple Sclerosis.
Multiple Sclerosis Vitamins and Supplements
Even if we have a healthy diet, we can still be deficient in vitamins that we as MSers could find beneficial for our health and well being. I will list some of these below that people with Multiple Sclerosis find helpful for managing their symptoms.
In Australia we really do get ripped off as far as vitamins and supplements are concerned, I generally source these from a reputable company in the USA, iHerb are reasonably priced and deliver your products quickly and for a reasonable freight fee. I have a iHerb page of recommendations of what to purchase and you can also get up to a ten dollar discount off your first order, visit the link directly below and use the code YUG116 when ordering to get the discount.
I will list the vitamins and supplements below that are recommended for us MSers to take.
This Vitamin appears to be very important for people who have Multiple Sclerosis, even the Neurologists support the taking of this important vitamin, which in itself is reason enough to supplement with Vitamin D3 the "sunshine" vitamin. It is important to get your levels checked occasionally and before you start taking it to get a base level, your blood level should be around 150-160 nmol, I use the following to maintain my levels.
Healthy Origins, Vitamin D3, 5,000 IU, 360 Softgels
The product linked to above is 5 days short of a years supply, they are 5000iu (international units), that strength seems to maintain the correct blood level for myself, you can also get 10,000iu which you my need to take at the start to get your levels up, all this can be worked out from a blood test.
Healthy Origins, Vitamin D3, 10,000 IU, 360 Softgels
I have found most of the medicos involved with treating Multiple Sclerosis are on board with supplementing with Vitamin D3, so work with your doctors to get blood tests and advice! Just so you know, in Australia we can only get 1,000iu strength vitamin D3, unless it is prescribed by a doctor, only then can you get high strength Vitamin D3.
Something to so your own research in to, is the Vitamin K2, some say if you are supplementing with higher amounts of Vitamin D (which is the case for people who have Multiple Sclerosis) then you should also make sure you get enough of the K2 Vitamin. (more to come)
Please do your own research and consult your medical professional!
