Mathematics for Economists Spring 2016
Syllabus (updated 16 December 2015)
Time and place for lectures and exams:
Lectures: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3.30-4.45 pm, building 83, room 202.
Mid-term exam: Tuesday 19 April. Solution (posted 19 April 7.05 pm).
Final exam: Tuesday 7 June. 3.25 - 4.50 pm, building 83, room 202. Solution (posted 10 June 5.40 pm).
Material relevant for the final exam:
Everything in the lecture notes (part 1, 2 and 3), up to page 43 in part 3 (including uniform convergence).
At least 75-80% of the final exam will be about real analysis (part 3 of the lecture notes). Within each of the three main topics (linear algebra, optimization and real analysis), the time spent on something in class reflects its importance and likely weight in the exam.
Use the footnotes in the lecture notes as a guide for which part of the textbooks are covered. If a theorem or definition is in the relevant textbook chapter but not in the lecture notes, you do not need to know it. Everything you need to know is in the lecture notes, but I recommend using the textbooks for additional explanations and examples, and for problems.
No lecture: Thursday 21 April (study day) and Thursday 5 May (children's day)
Lecture notes:
Part 1, Part 2*, Part 3
