Bombers Rally To Beat Nitro 9-8, Advance To Bomber Bash Semis

The 10U OYO Bombers dealt with some adversity in the quarterfinal round of the Bomber Bash tournament, rallying from behind twice to beat the Indiana Nitro 9-8. The win advanced the Bombers to the semifinal round to play the heavy hitting Northern Stars.

Three innings of scoreless play between the Bombers and Nitro delivered a severe blow to the OYO squad as Jake Stadler was force to leave the game after fracturing his left arm when he was hit with the ball while trying to steal. The Bombers had to remain focused after losing their number three hitter, but everyone stepped up to fill the spot vacated by Stadler and brought home the win.

After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the fourth, the Bombers had a perfect chance to fade under the hot sun and tough circumstances. With two outs, Jacob Graff swung at a dropped strike three and made it safe to first. Then ol' "Big Mo" got up out his comfy chair made his way over to the third base dugout. Patrick Mastrian lured the big fella over by taking a 1-2 fast ball deep and over the left field fence for a two-run, game-tying home run. The dinger sparked a big two-out rally that scored three more runs to push the Bombers in front 5-2 after four innings.

In the fifth inning the Nitro scored one, but the Bombers answered with a pair of runs, highlighted by Jacob Graff knocking a run-scoring double. The Bombers couldn't put away the win in the top of the sixth, though as the Nitro fought back with four doubles and a triple to score five runs and take an 8-7 lead to the bottom of the sixth.

The Bombers weren't above to give in and went to work with Nick Taylor putting the tying run on base with a single. Mason Montgomery then put winning into the equation by spanking a double to score Taylor and put the winning run in scoring positions. With no outs, Nolan Bowser and Dawson Gabe were both hit by a pitch to load the bases for Zach Lewis. After fouling off a squeeze bunt attempt, Lewis slapped the second pitch past the drawn-in infield to spark a winning celebration and keep the Bombers alive in the Bomber Bash.

Favorite play of the game: I was forced to follow this game via iphone from a lovely park in Plainfield while also watching a 7U tournament. Twice the Bombers made me draw attention to myself by cheering out loud during a lull in the 7U game action. First, with the Bombers appearing to be hanging on by a thread, Patrick Mastrian comes through with a home run - a first for the 10U Bombers on their home fields at OYO Memorial Park. Of course, the second scream of a solitary madman came courtesy of Zach Lewis when the iScore feed flashed : #5 Zach lewis hits a single. #7 Mason Montgomery scores. Game over. Yeah, game over, baby!

Next up: The 31-11 Bombers advance to the semifinals of the Bomber Bash to play the Northern Stars. Go Bombers! 444
