Greetings and Welcome to the Shire of Owl’s Nest!
The Shire of Owl’s Nest is a local branch of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), serving the north metro-Atlanta areas of Kennesaw, Marietta, Smyrna, Acworth, Woodstock, and points beyond. The Shire located is within the Kingdom of Meridies, which encompasses Georgia, Alabama, most of Tennessee, the pan-handle of Florida, and small parts of Virginia and Kentucky.
The SCA is an international, non-profit, educational organization that spans the globe. Our Known World consists of 19 kingdoms, with over 30,000 members. Members of the SCA try to recreate the best of the middle ages (no plagues or famines for us), generally focusing on pre-17th century of Western Europe. However, it is not uncommon to find folks who also explore other cultures of the Old World during this time period—such as Russian, Asian, North African, Middle Eastern—and their interactions with Western Europe.
Participants in the SCA study the arts, crafts, sciences, and histories of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Some people find an area of concentration, such as woodworking or illumination, in which to develop an expertise. Others find so many topics fascinating that they can’t focus on only one. And others just enjoy the company of those who share the same interest in the periods of the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
At various times and locations throughout the year, local groups sponsor events that members from around the kingdom attend while dressed in attire of the Middle Ages and Renaissance for the culture of their choice. These events may feature art exhibits, workshops, tournaments, feasts, dances, and a host of other activities. At some events, there may also be a royal court where members are recognized and honored for the contributions to their local group or to their kingdom.
