Robert enlisted 5 Sept 1914 and set sail for France on the 2 Oct 1915, were having endured trench warfare contacted an illness and was sent to Dudley Rd Birmingham 3/1st Southern general hospital for treatment.
After some time in hospital he was discharged 7th Sept 1917 and was awarded the Silver War Badge.

History

This cemetery dates from the 14th century, and once belonged to St. Matthew's Church of Ireland.

In 1964 it was converted into a Garden of Rest when Belfast city council took possession.

There are now 8 registered Commonwealth burials of the 1914-1918 war commemorated here.

Pte John McManus died of pneumonia in Victoria Barracks
Belfast, he belong to M.T.R.A.S. Corps, deceased had about three years service with the Highland Light Infantry, and having been wounded was invalided. He rejoined the M.T. and served until his death.
His brother, Rifleman Charles served with the Royal Irish Rifles while his father was also in the army. He leaves a wife who resides at 3 Dagmar St, Belfast.

This was the verse his Mother and Father placed in the Belfast newspaper.
In fond and loving memory of our dear son No 310462 Pte Walter Ambrose Sterling, R.A.F.  aged 14 years and 7 months, who departed this life on 5th November, 1918, at Blandford Camp Hospital, Dorset, and was interred in Shankill Burying ground, Belfast.
                      For his life so young and fair

      Now has passed from earthly care;

      God Himself his soul will keep.

      Giving His beloved sleep.

      Sadly missed by his loving Father and Mother,Brothers and Sisters.Wesley and Margaret Sterling. 63 Newport Street, Belfast.
