Welcome 2020!

Welcome to Ottawa’s first Toastmasters Youth Gavel club!  We are a venue for youths to practice public speaking and leadership skills.  Overtime, members will gain self-confidence, find their voice, and be able to influence the world around them.

Toastmasters has been around since 1924, with clubs in over 140 countries, and has helped millions of people over the years with communications and leadership skills.  Industry leaders like Google, Apple, Amazon, AT&T, Bank of America, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, UPS, etc. are using the Toastmasters International program to develop and enhance these skills as well as the confidence of their employees.

Our youths had a wonderful Fall session, as you can see from the images in the Gallery.  Youths practiced giving firm handshakes, passing control of the podium, volunteered for different roles in a club meeting, some had an opportunity to chair a meeting, gave speech evaluations, learned lectern etiquette, lead impromptu speaking sessions, respond to impromptu questions, lead team building activities, and much more!  Many youths had an opportunity to present their first Ice Breaker speech to see where they are at with their speaking level.

From the Fall session, we recognized there is a need for a parent club to support the youth club so that the youth club will have the available experienced resources to support future sessions. For this coming Winter session, we are asking parents to register with their kid(s), so that they can reap the benefits of the Toastmasters Program, and later on, share their knowledge to the youth club.  Helping out the youth club is voluntary.

There are many benefits for parents; ranging from improving family communications, to improving career opportunities, to self development, to sharing parenting skills (and challenges) with other parents, to improving your community, networking, and so on.  For kids, we already know the benefits of empowering them with communications skills and leadership skills.  For families, the benefit is a common communication channel between the parent and child.  Imagine sitting around the dinner table and having fun practicing answering each other’s table topics questions, or practice giving and receiving feedback in a positive way that encourages the parent or the youth when trying to resolve conflict.  These are just some ideas on the possibilities.

We welcome youths who are 9-17 years old.  Our focus is on fun while gaining valuable experiences for each member’s future!

Our clubs run in sessions (Fall, Winter, Spring).

Registration fees for our Winter Session will be $100 per youth (includes the parent’s Toastmasters membership). Additional siblings are $100 per youth.

The Winter session will run from Jan 31, 2020 to Apr 3, 2020!  Fridays, 7:30pm-9:00pm.

Location: Richcraft Recreation Complex (Kanata), Minto Room.

Registration is currently full.  You may still submit a registration to be placed on our waiting list.  When a space is available or if we have enough interest to start a second session, we will contact you.

Thank you for your interest!  We look forward to seeing you soon!
