The 22nd Annual Slater/Johnson Memorial Awards will be held on April 14, 2017 at 6:00 pm in the MLK lounge of the Frank W. Hale Black Cultural Center.

Larry Williamson Service Award

Named after Lawrence "Larry" Williamson, Director of the Frank W. Hale Black Cultural Center, this award is granted to faculty, staff, and students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, unprecedented commitment to community, and offered innovative solutions to issues facing students of color with the Black Graduate and Professional Student Caucus.

William E. Nelson Research & Travel Grant - $200 (2)

Named in honor of Professor Emeritus William E. Nelson, professor of political science and African American & African Studies, the Caucus awards two small grants to support the research and travel of two outstanding graduate students at the Ohio State University.

Slater & Johnson Memorial Undergraduate Essay Contest - $100

Undergraduates at the Ohio State University are invited and encouraged to participate in the annual Slater & Johnson Memorial Essay Scholarship contest. Students must submit an essay of no more than 750 words that answers the following question:

The theme for this year’s Slater Johnson Memorial Reception is “Honoring the Spirit of Excellence.” Considering the political climate of this election year, what important qualities do you think a political leader should have to embody the spirit of excellence? In what ways do you embody some of these qualities at The Ohio State University or in your local community?
