A Guide to the Ostracods of Lorain County, Ohio
the crescent shaped ostracodes full of green pigment are genus Potamocypris. Keying out the species needs the 'scope, as the shell differences can be determined by front/back left/right shell overlap. The green makes me think they may be P. smaragdina, but there are others in Ohio

looks like Dolerocypris sinensis to me. Interesting story about this sp in Ohio. Its an invasive from rice fields, and during the canal days it entered the shallow canal waterways in northeast Ohio prob from eggs in bags of rice that were cargo, and then spread. Norma Furtos tracked it from the canals way back in the 1930's. Norma wrote Ostracoda of Ohio, a 1933 monograph we still use today.
We know it is in Ohio, and I have found it sporadically from Maryland thru PA. Also, it is now in the US rice fields too. Its very pretty!

acc. to the color the upper animal can be Bradleystrandesia fuscata. 'B.
fuscata occurs normaly in stagnant waters, but also in springs (Meisch
2000). I could not see the small one. And the lower picture I can see
only the posterior part. Cypria exsculta has a characteristic sculpture
of the carapace, valves with dedicate longitudinal striations!
Best regards and good succes
Burkhard Scharf
From Cold Creek Castilia Ohio 3/18/2017
It could be Fabaeformiscandona.
In dorsal view it is laterally compressed, and to be sure about genus,
the setae on the mandibular palp should be checked.
Call A the smaller Candona upper right
B the larger one on the left
The smaller one on bottom right is an immature Bradleystrandesia tincta

Hi, you are right, they are same species, different sexes. The upper one is indeed Candona crogmaniana female, and the lower one is the male of the same species. The eggs are visible through the carapace in the female, and the zenker's organ (a kind of sperm pump) is visible in the male.

Added this last one. The reason that I didn't include it with the rest is that is so enormous compared to the other ostracods I've seen that I hesitate to think that it is even an ostracod. This monster is 2 to 3 mm. long.
Too large to photograph could be Eucyprid

The little on the lower left of 282 next to the large female C.. decora is a real mystery, I've never seen one quite like.

to me, Robin, Francesc
Dear all,
I was short in my last comment, but I do not disagree with Dr Mezquita and Dr Smith.
The epibionts are indeed ciliates (probably vorticella, epistylis and similar taxa).
Beside them, the hemisphaerical structures (without stalks) on the valve surface could be encysted larval stage of trematodes.
Cheers,
Tamara
