About Us

Mission Statement

In order to improve the quality of life for Oglala Lakota children and families, this Corporation is established to provide an integrated system of services through an organized collaboration of committed organizations and individuals which results in:
  • Empowering and strengthening Oglala Lakota children and families.
  • Oglala Lakota children living with their biological families.
  • Fulfilling the basic needs of Oglala Lakota children and families.
  • Healthy Oglala Lakota families who understand and live the Lakota way of life.
  • Oglala Lakota children and families having access to a wide range of services that are based on traditional Lakota practices, customs, and the values of respect, generosity, courage, and wisdom.

The LOWO Board has had the privilege of participating with this historical event in which the Oglala Lakota Sioux Tribe has taken over from the State of South Dakota the Child Protection Services.

The Oglala Sioux Tribal Council enacted the Youth and Family Code, Wakanyeja Na Tiwahe Ta Woope, in May 2007, which will deal specifically with the Foster Care and Child Protection functions for the children and families.  The changes that LOWO has incorporated are the Lakota traditional customs and practices and a family based approach to dealing with foster care and abuse and neglect situations.  This change will enable our families to have a goal of preserving the Lakota customs and traditions so that in the future the families that we are in the process of building and preserving will carry out their own care and protection of Tiospaye (family) members.

As of February 1, 2008, LOWO will become the sole Child Protection Services agency on the Pine Ridge Reservation.  We are so proud of our Tribal Council for passing the Child and Familly Code, and LOWO's staff for all their hard work and dedication for caring out these difficult but needed services to our Lakota famillies.  There is still a list of things to do but for now the mail goal has been accomplished.  As a new Board we all together have made great progress and accomplished so much, we are proud to be a part of this great accomplishment.
