The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is now recommending that everyone come in for their regular check ups. I agree with this for a couple of reasons. One reason is that we have succeeded in flattening the COVID-19 curve in the United States and in Las Vegas. It does not look like we are even close to overwhelming our hospitals in Las Vegas. The second reason is that vaccination rates have dropped quite a bit which makes it more likely that we will have outbreaks of vaccine preventable infections like measles or whooping cough. Vaccine rates have dropped about 55% in infants 2 years old and less. Among children more than 2 years old, vaccine rates have dropped about 90%. Call now for an appointment!

In the era of COVID-19, if you would like to wait in your car rather than the reception area, let the front desk know WHEN YOU SIGN IN and they can text you when we are ready to bring you back to an exam room. Try to limit the number of people who accompany your child to the appointment to only those who are necessary. Always bring all medicines to all appointments. Stay safe and continue to social distance!

A little bit about Oshiro Pediatrics

We saw our first patient in December 2000.  We have been at the same location ever since.  We have four healthcare providers.  Noelle Cerdan, CPNP is a board certified pediatric nurse practitioner.  Amanda Knowles, PA-C is a board certified physicians assistant.  Vicki Hom, MD FAAP and Andrew Oshiro, MD FAAP are both board certified pediatricians.  We limit the number of families in our practice so when your child needs to be seen the same day, we are able to have an appointment available.  When we feel we are close to reaching our capacity, we stop accepting new families to our practice.  When we have the capacity to see more patients, we restart accepting new families.  We are currently accepting most new families.  We always accept new siblings from our current families.  We provide well and sick care for infants, children, and adolescents from birth to the age of 21 years.

We accept almost all insurances in Nevada including Aetna, Amerigroup, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Cigna, Coventry, Culinary, First Health, Magellan, Medicaid, Pacificare, Smart Choice, Straight medicaid, Teachers Health Trust, UMR, and United Healthcare.  Click here for more information on insurance billing or if you do not have insurance.

What makes our practice different?

Dr. Oshiro is the owner/office manager and one of the four providers at Oshiro Pediatircs.  It is very clear where the buck stops.  It stops with him.  Our practice is very detailed oriented.  We try to get all the little things right.  We do make mistakes, but we try to have a culture where mistakes are identified, not hidden.  When we see a mistake happen, we try to change the process which led to the mistake.  We believe that we can always do something better.  We seek and value input from all of our staff members.  I think that our practice runs better than most, but you will have to be the judge of that statement.

We encourage appointments even for sick visits.  If your child is VERY VERY sick, you should call 911.  If your child is VERY sick, you should go to the emergency room.  If your child is sick, we should see your child and we will.  Just call and we will schedule a time for your child to come in.  If your child is sick and can wait until the next day and we are open, we will schedule a time for you to come in.  I hate to make guarantees, but in 10 years I don't think that we have EVER not been able to accommodate someone the following day.  If you call before 10am, there is a 99.999% chance that we can see your child that SAME DAY.  If you call between 10 am and 11:30 am, there is a 99.99% chance that we can see your child that SAME DAY.  If you call after lunch, we almost always can see your child that same day.  If we can not see your child the same day, you can go to an urgent care of emergency room.  You can walk-in to our office, but you could wait for hours and even then not be seen.  The flip side to this policy is that you will probably wait less time than you do at other practices when you have an appointment.
