Free online books!

The website http://www.wegivebooks.org/ is really awesome for parents of children 0-7 years of age.  There are free online copies of some great books which you can read with your child.  They have the classics such as:  The Little Engine that Could, Madeline, and Frosty the Snowman.  Even better, when you read a book online, they will donate an actual book to a literacy organization.  Some organizations they have helped in the past include:  United Way of Florida, Harlem Children's Zone, and Read for Central America.  They have donated almost 1 million books so far.

At Oshiro Pediatrics, we are strong proponents of reading.  Reading books helps your child to learn language.  Books with pictures are great because your child can see what you are reading about.  When you read about Paris and your child sees a picture of the Eiffel Tower, you will link the two in your child's mind and he/she will better understand what kind of city Paris is.

Personally, I (Dr. Oshiro) would get a little bored when I read books to my children.  So I would make up my own stories as I read to my child.  If I was reading the Hungry Caterpillar, I might say, "I hope there isn't a bird flying around that will eat the hungry caterpillar!"  "I hope that caterpillar doesn't eat our tomatoes!"
