2009 Grant

National Capital Environmental Network

The first project supported by the Fund, in partnership with the Community Foundation of Ottawa and Maison Tucker House, was the creation in 2009 of the National Capital Environmental Network.

The goals of the Network were, and continue to be to:

  • share information and resources among local environmental groups in the national capital region

  • provide opportunities for networking among the staff, Board members, and volunteers of non-governmental organizations

  • provide capacity-building opportunities that address specific needs and concerns in the local environmental sector

Results

The National Capital Environmental Network has thrived and changed its name to the National Capital Environmental Nonprofit Network. It now fosters collaboration amongst environmental non-profit organizations across Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec.

It holds regular monthly networking sessions, hosted by various local environmental groups.  It holds two larger, capacity-building workshops each year, including a Funders' Forum, which brings together grant-giving organizations and environmental organizations.

It has created a community energy network, an inventory of environment groups, and a National Capital Green Directory and Map.   It has established an interactive  website: SustainableEasternOntario

Commentary

This first investment by the OSFund has proven to be catalytic.  This grassroots community organization is meeting its goals now and for the foreseeable future. The high calibre of proposals that are now received by the OSFund directly reflects the benefits of the networking and information made available by Sustainable Eastern Ontario.
