History of Ornamental Iron & Wrought Iron
Wrought iron is a very pure form of iron, with carbon content below 0.15% . Wrought Iron is tough, malleable, and ductile. The obsolete process of "bloomery" resulted in the name "wrought iron", as the iron was pounded and twisted during this manufacturing technique. Abraham Darby's blast furnace in 1709 got iron prices dropping rapidly with high production. However blast furnace pig iron is very brittle. To use it for ornamental iron and ironmongery, it has to be reduced with oxides developed to react with excess carbon which then bubbles out as carbon dioxide.
Wrought Iron products today are predominantly of mild steel (also described as ornamental iron work). Classic Wrought Iron has not been manufactured commercially for over 2 centuries except at a special foundry in North India near New Delhi which specialises in rust-proof ornamental iron work and restoration ornamental iron gates. .. SMXIRON franchises gates operations
SMX.IRON appoints gate franchises in South India.
On 7 Jan 2007, SMXIRON Works appointed 2 new dealers for ornamental iron gates
in the cities of Nellore and Secunderabad in the Southern India state of Andhra Pradesh. Balaji Ornamentals (Nellore) and CRM Iron Traders (Secunderabad) will now exclusively distribute SMXIRON CKD custom iron gates and BISON brand gate components within the territory alloted to them within A.P. State.
Marketing Manager (South Zone) for SMXIRON Mr. C.S.Raju, says that although the
local wrought iron fabricators are supplying gates and iron railings at cheaper prices in Andhra Pradesh, the quality of these locally manufactured gates and railings is quite inferior to the mass produced gates to international standards and dimensions which SMXIRON Works is exporting to over 20 countries now. SMXIRON intends to initially focus on the large builders and institutional buyers in the State, and similar dealers are also being appointed in the neighbouring States of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
SMXIRON Works is located near New Delhi (North India), and the company claims
that appointing local dealers will benefit consumers by reducing the freight and transport costs through consolidation. With over 3,000 standard gate designs in their current manufacturing program, SMXIRON intends to be able to deliver and install International quality custom iron gates within 10
days of order placement, which is remarkable in a industry notorious for delays in the South of India.

India Iron group offers new machines : INDIA IRON WEBSITE dated 1 Jan 2007
from Syndicated Wire Reports
The India Iron Group has announced the new export prices for their wrought iron machines with effect from 01,Jan 2007. The Group say that prices have been increased by about 12% from last year on account of the tremendous hike in iron and steel prices in India. However, prices of their popular PR-20 embossing unit have been somewhat reduced due to redesign of the machine to handle hollow tubes and pipes. The basic PR-20 is now offered for export at Euro € 13,200 ex-works compared to the earlier price of Euro € 14,700.
As a closeup view of the dies and toolings of the PR-20 iron embossing machine shows, the tooling technology is identical to that used by European manufacturers of similar machines as India's BISON company is an OEM supplier of CNC (computer manufactured) and hand crafted roller embossing dies to many German and Spanish machine manufacturers also. The best international tool steels are used to make these roller dies which are then tempered in computer controlled furnaces for long life.
Prices have been raised ,however, on the Group's BISON SBZ-3 stand alone iron scrolling machine. This computer controlled scroll forming machine is capable of producing upto 300 complex wrought iron scrolls per hour. Multi-segmented scrolling dies driven from a variable speed AC drive with encoder feedback and derivative spring back control results in accurate and consistent scrolls every time, as per the company sources. The SBZ-3 ornamental iron scroller and scroll bender is now priced at Euro € 9,600 ex-works.
The India Iron Group also has a dedicated facility for automated ornamental iron scroll production. This unit is presently exclusively catering to the Middle East and Gulf market. With the increase in capacity by introduction of 12 new computerised machines, 2 of them with robot loaders, the Indian Iron Group is aggresively targeting the European and North America markets which are highly price sensitive.
This is a view of manual production of end forged scrolls at the works of an India Iron Group facility. The ends of rods and flat sections are roll pressed into flat decorative sections for easy insert ion and gripping in the automatic scroll bending machines. End forging improves the look of the finished scroll say company sources.

Indian Wrought Iron prices plunge
Steel mills in China, are deferring shipments of iron ore squeezed by overcapacity, Beijing's fresh measures to cool the economy and a global economic slowdown.
"Mittal Steel Co, the world biggest steel maker, said that consumption in the United States was suffering from an inventory overhang.
Spot Indian iron ore prices - which are seen as the barometer for China's steel sector - fell to below $US70 a tonne iron ore traders said.
Chinese prices for hot-rolled coil fell 1500 to 2000 yuan per tonne to below 4000 yuan per tonne, the Beijing trader added. The slowdown has pushed freight rates from Brazil to China down to $US20 a tonne, half the first quarter level, shipping officials said. Some of the world's top steel makers, including Arcelor and ThyssenKrupp, have already announced production cuts to counter a downward price trend."
Prices of finished wrought iron products from India were quite firm and hovered around US$3,000 (for LSB) to US$6,000 (top end) per tonne, with shipping costs to USA of around US$3,000 per 20 foot container.
