Science Magnet High Schools

Orissa should establish a few science magnet high schools, starting with one associated with the Institute of Mathematics and Applications
.

The central government realizing that India is falling behind in Science, has recently established  5 IISERs (Indian Institute of Science Engineering Research) in Kolkata, Pune, Bhopal, Mohali and Thiruvanthapuram and a NISER (National Indian Institute of Science Engineering Research) in Bhubaneswar. Also, Indian Institute Science, Bangalore is planning to start undergraduate program in science.

The Indian government has also established the INSPIRE scholarships for students pursuing science and has programs like KVPY.

However, all this has not been enough to get sufficient number of top students after +2 to pursue science. The broader society pushes the young kids in  India towards engineering and this needs to be countered by exposing more bright young people to the wonders of science at an younger age.

In USA and many other countries this is done at science magnet schools where bright young students with inclinations towards science are provided an atmosphere where they get exposed to the wonders of science and its methods. I do not know of any such science magnet school in India. (IIT Coaching high schools in Kota or other places don't count. I am told at best certain schools have special science groupings and there are those junior science colleges at +2 level. To understand what I mean by a science magnet school one may explore the web page of the Illinois Math and Science Academy (http://www.imsa.edu). 40% of IMSA faculty have Ph.Ds and it has a Nobel  laureate as a residential scholar.  There are many other such science magnet schools in the USA such as http://www.dallasisd.org/schools/hs/sem/  (School of Science and Engineering in Dallas), http://www.lsmsa.edu/Welcome/index.htm (The Louisiana School of Math, Science and Arts), http://www.bsu.edu/academy/ (The Indiana Academy for Science Mathematics and Humanities, associated with a university),  http://www.bxscience.edu/?rn=7944 (Bronx high school of science ), http://www.ncssm.edu/ (North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics), and http://www.tams.unt.edu/ (Texas Academy of Maths and Sciences, associated with a university).

I propose that the government of Orissa on its own or through partnership with a corporate house or the central government establish a science magnet high school. Since the Institute of Mathematics and Applications (IMA), Bhubaneswar already has a process to identify bright students through its RMTS (Rural Math Talent Search) examination and is already providing short term training to the selected students the proposed science magnet school can be made in association and collaboration with IMA. Its role would be similar to the role of Sainik Schools vis-a-vis NDA and the Indian military academy.
