Letter from the President
July 2017

Dear Members,

I can hardly believe that it is already near the end of July and time to start thinking about firing things up (if you haven't already) for the 2017-18 school year. Towards that end I'd like to encourage everyone to attend this year's Reading Session of New and Proven Concert and Jazz Band Music, sponsored by Beacock Music. Further information (including registration, location, fees, etc.) can be found here:

We are once again fortunate to have some great clinicians and conductors who have picked out some fantastic literature. As always, the camaraderie and collegiality promises to be first rate, too!

In addition, the OBDA by-laws specify that one of our two mandated semi-yearly meetings happens at the reading session and I would like to try and follow that directive. I am currently leaning towards having the meeting on Wednesday of that week, either before or after the day's regular session. I am, however, open to suggestions.

In any event, I look forward to renewing old acquaintances and making new ones.

Musically,

Jeff Hornick
President, OBDA

David Maslanka’s Mass at Oregon State University

On April 20th at 7:30 PM, the OSU Wind Ensemble, in collaboration with the Corvallis Repertory Singers, OSU Chamber Choir, and OSU Bella Voce will perform David Maslanka’s Mass at the LaSells-Stewart Center on OSU’s campus.

In conjunction with this performance, we are developing curricular materials aligned with state standards to provide contextual and historical understandings of the mass, and the performance of Maslanka’s Mass.  Additionally, on the night of the concert, we will have 2 twenty-minute presentations prior to the performance.  The first will be made by OSU music history professor Kimary Fick about the mass in general, and the second by David Maslanka, Steve Zielke (OSU Chamber Choir) and Sandra Babb (OSU Bella Voce) about David’s composition.  This performance will also be recorded by Mark Records to be released as part of a David Maslanka composer series.

You and your students are cordially invited to attend what promises to be an extraordinary evening.  Admission to the performance is free for students and directors. To help us plan for the evening please RSVP if you plan to attend and include the number of students you will bring.  We plan to send out materials by mid to late March.

This monumental work is rarely performed and will be a treat for all.  As you can see, we are very excited about this opportunity and hope you can join us!

Please contact Jason B. Gossett (jason.gossett@oregonstate.edu) with any questions you have.
