Approximately 30 km from the Thai-Burma border, in the town of Mae Hong Son, Thailand, the orphanage, Opportunity for Poor Children (OPC), was founded in 2002. It provides education and care for children exiled by the many troubles in Burma.

The orphanage now cares for 44 boys and girls aged between 6 and 15, who attend local Thai schools. The children are housed in dorms half a kilometer walk from the road, through rice paddies, streams, and across a bamboo bridge. The orphanage has no running water or electricity, and keeping up with basic day-to-day needs is a constant struggle for the center’s founder Kham Chuen.

This website was set up in 2008 by volunteers hoping to promote awareness of the plight of these children, and to appeal for help through both volunteering and donations. Please click on the links to find out more information about the orphanage, the children and the director/founder, as well as information regarding the crisis in Burma.

The Mae Hong Son region is one of the most beautiful areas in the world, so considering a visit would be extremely worthwhile! You would not be disappointed.
