Misc.

Experience installing Debian on Dell D820:

  • Basic install:

Business Card Install burned to CD ROM from debian testing download site.

Recognized existing Disk partitions including one holding Windows XP and allowed to make adjustments to their sizes.

Chose 686 kernel, not the 64 bit.

  • Graphics:

Default Graphics driver was inadequate and only created slow 1280x1024 display instead of native 1680x1050 resolution.

Downloaded driver from:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_1.0-9631.html

installed with:

#sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9631-pkg1.run --kernel-source-path /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.18

But first, had to:

#cd /lib/modules/2.6.18-3-686

#ln -s  /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.18 build

#cd /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.18

#make oldconfig && make prepare

and

#make-kpkg kernel-image

(see http://www.stanchina.net/~flavio/debian/fglrx-archive/msg00953.html) to build modpost binary.
Packages needed to install:

kernel-package

pkg-config

linux-source-2.6.18

Update for 2.6.21:

NVIDIA download page:  http://www.nvidia.com/page/partner_certified_drivers.html

1)Debian method:

 http://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers

2)http://grizach.sc18.info/nvpatch/#1

( http://grizach.servebeer.com/nvpatch/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1-patched.run worked)

  • Wireless

No default wireless driver for Intel/PRO Wireless 3945ABG.

Followed instructions on http://ipw3945.sourceforge.net/ No problem to compile and get interface to work but it does not show with `ifconfig -a' at boot time unless you fire up manually the ipw3945d regulatory daemon.

  • Sound

I only needed to install gnome-audio package to make the desktop sounds work.

Tested wav, ogg, mp2, mp3 OK.

  • Modem

Download hsfmodem_7.60.00.02full_i386.deb.zip debian package from: https://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/full/downloads.php#generic and dpkg -i
