João Ventura obtained his PhD in Physics by the University of Porto (UP) in 2006. In 2008, he became an Assistant Researcher at the Institute of Physics of Materials of the University of Porto (IFIMUP). In 2012, J. Ventura was elected President of IFIMUP and appointed member of the Executive Commission of the Associate Laboratory, Institute of Nanosciencies and Nanotechnologies (IN). Presently, J. Ventura is a Principal Researcher and Vice-President at IFIMUP and Vice-Director of the Micro- and Nano-Fabrication Unit of the University of Porto (CEMUP-MNTEC). His research is placed at the interface between materials and devices in a broad range of energy harvesting and nano-electronic applications, currently focusing on advanced triboelectric nanogenerators and memristive-based neuromorphic applications.

J. Ventura co-authored 5 book chapters, over 150 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals (including Nature Nanotechnology, Nano Energy, Physical Review Letters or Journal of Materials Chemistry), has an h-index of 21 and over 1670 citations (source: ISI Web of Science), as well as 4 pending patent applications and over 200 communications in international conferences (including 6 plenary/invited). He is the advisor of 3 postdoctoral researchers, 4 PhD and 2 MSc students and has already completed the supervision of 4 postdoctoral researchers, 3 PhD and 16 MSc students. J. Ventura is the Principal Investigator of 1 EU, 2 FCT and 1 Industrial projects. In addition, he already successfully completed the direction of funded projects both as PI (3) and local coordinator (4).
