Industry Research: How do I find...?

Below is a list of many of the most common types of information or data sought by scholars researching companies. Most of the items listed are available only to authorized SUNY Old Westbury users (students, faculty, and staff) or to visitors using the library computers. Some resources are, however, paper resources available only at the library, and some others are available on the open Web. They are identified as shown below:

OW -- Mergent Online--You can create a report containing the Industry averages you need. Click here for specific instructions.

OW -- Standard & Poor's Net Advantage -- some industry financial informaiton in the Investment Surveys (search box on the right side, middle of the page).

OW & P -- RMA Annual eStatement Studies  and RMA Statement Studies--also vailable in paper at the Old Westbury Library, this book contains detailed data and ratios for industries, organized by NAICS code. It is held at the Reference Desk--ask for it there.

Competitors in the Company's Industry

OW -- Mergent Online-- under the Competitors tab
OW --  Standard & Poor's Net Advantage--search for the Company Profile under Publication Search, then click on Competitors (left sidebar).
Country Information and Data

OW --  Business Source Complete -- choose Country Reports from the Publication Type dropdown menu (in the Search Options area at the bottom of the search page) to search or browse through profiles by country.

OW --  Country Watch--demographic and geographic data as well as current news articles on all countries.

IN -- CIA World Factbook--highly detailed information on countries, including geography, governments, and economy.

Industry Information

OW -- Business Insights: Essentials--go to Industry Overview tab in the company profile, or search by Industry on main search page.

OW -- Mergent Online--Industry Reports tab in company profile.

OW -- Standard & Poor's Net Advantage--under Quick Links (right sidebar), use the Industry Survey dropdown menu to browse industries.

OW -- Value Line Investment Survey--under My Value Line, choose Standard Edition, then Lookup Industry to find Industry Report.

News
OW -- LexisNexis Academic -- full-text newspapers and journals, wire services, news broadcast transcripts, business, and legal publications.

IN --  All of the major news sites provide up-to-the-minute Business news:
CNN Money, Bloomberg, BBC Business, Reuters, Google, and so on. 

OW --  You can also browse the leading business periodicals:
Wall Street Journal, Barrons, New York Times, and many others.
