Home Remedies to remove Old and New Carpet Stains, Mildew Stains, and Stubborn Pet Odors!

Household solutions for removing old or new stains from your carpets such as blood, coffee, grease, ink stains, ketchup, lipstick, paint, candle wax, pet stains and more... 

1. Blood Stains 
Mix in a large spray bottle two tsp Dawn liquid dish detergent soap with "cold" water and shake well to combine ingredients. Liberally spray stain and blot with a white towel then rinsing with "cold" water. Repeat if necessary.                 

2. General Stains, Mold & Mildew
Mix 1 part borax with two parts cornmeal and use this powdered mixture to remove stains, prevent mold and mildew, and to deodorize carpets. Leave the cleaning solution on the stain for an hour then vacuum. A great cleaning product for stubborn laundry stains, too.  


5. Beer
Use beer to remove carpet stains. Just pour a bit of beer onto the stain and allow the carpet to dry completely. Repeat until stain disappears then blot area with cold water. Watch Video Tutorial     


4. Coffee Stains 
Mix 1/4 cup vinegar with 1/4 cup non-bleach detergent into a large spray bottle almost filled with water. Shake to combine ingredients then spray onto the coffee stain and blot with a white towel. Rinse with cold water and repeat until stain is gone.      

5. Candle Wax 
Cover wax with an old clean towel then run a hot iron over it until all wax transfers onto a towel. Lift towel periodically and replace with the new clean section over remaining wax and repeat until all wax is removed.      
6. Lip Stick 
Mix water and dishwasher soap with cold water and "blot" stain until removed.      

7. Grease Stains 
Pour cornstarch onto grease stain and work into carpet fibers with fingers then leave on overnight and vacuum in the morning. Repeat if necessary. Do Not Use Liquid of any kind! Cornstarch works best on untreated stains.    

8. Kool-aid
1. Mix in a large spray bottle 1/4 cup of white vinegar with one tablespoon dawn dish soap and cold water. 
Liberally spray stain and allow to sit for 5-10 minutes then "blot" with a clean, dry towel. Repeat until stain is completely removed.

2. A hot iron works well on new Kool-aid stains, too. Place a clean white towel over carpet stain and run a hot iron over a clean towel to absorb Kool-aid stain. 
9. Mustard and Ketchup Stains 
Pour soda water onto stain then cover with a light colored towel. Place heavy object over the towel to weight it down. Leave on overnight and repeat if necessary. Change towel as stain transfers onto it.       

10. Paint Spills on Carpet 
Mix 1 tablespoon vinegar, one tablespoon dishwashing liquid and 1-quart cold water. Saturate area with the mixture and rub clean.              
11. Pet Stains 
First, clean mess and blot moisture until almost dry. Then mix 1/2 cup of white vinegar with 1/2 cup warm water in a large spray bottle. Liberally spray affected area and leave on for several minutes then blot carpet stain until removed. When carpet is almost dry sprinkle area with baking soda to disinfect and remove odors. Mix one cup of hydrogen peroxide with one teaspoon of mild liquid detergent and slowly pour over baking soda working the mixture into carpet fibers. Allow to dry then vacuum thoroughly.      

12. Ink Stains 
Make a paste of cream of tartar and lemon juice then dab onto stain leaving on for 5-10 minutes. After blotting with lukewarm water to the cleaning solution. Dampen white towel with isopropyl alcohol and blot remaining ink stain. "Do not rub!" Continue blotting the stain until completely removed then vacuum.   

13. Light Color Carpet Stains 
Mix a 1/2 cup of lemon juice with one tablespoon of salt and blot stain with cleaning solution until carpet stain lifts out of carpet fibers. Once the stain is removed rinse area with cold water. 

14. Synthetic Fiber Rugs 
(wine, ketchup, chocolate, coffee, tea, beer, milk, tomato sauce, berries, juice, soda, Kool-Aid)

1. Moisten a white towel with liquid detergent and dab onto carpet stain. Then place moistened towel over the stain for about 15-20 minutes. After remove towel and blot area with warm water to remove detergent.  

2. Dampen a white towel with vinegar and dab onto stain for several minutes then lay over the stain for about 15-20 minutes. After time rinse with lukewarm water and allow the carpet to dry. If traces of the stain are still visible repeat treatment. 

15. Old Stains 
Dampen a terry cloth towel with 1/4 cup white vinegar and 3/4 water and place over the stain. Then place a heavy object over the towel and leave until towel is completely dry.   

16. Wine Stains                                                             
1. Mix water and dish soap then "blot" stain with the solution until removed. 

2. Apply shaving cream onto the stain and leave or a minute or so. After wipe away shaving cream and blot with cool water. (Spot test is recommended)     
17. Vinegar and Baking Soda Stain Removal Solution
First, soak carpet stain with vinegar then sprinkle on some baking soda. Wait a minute or so after solution starts to bubble then wipe clean and vacuum. 

18. Crayon Marks
Use a baby wipe to remove crayon marks on carpets. Just wipe stain in circular motions until it's gone. Fast and easy!
