Central Fire Station at Ascroft St c1935
Welcome!

My name is Mark Beswick and I retired from Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service in 2011 having served in various locations and ranks around the Briagade. For the last fifteen or so years I spent the most time stationed at E33 Oldham as Station Officer on Red and Amber Watches. During my time there I became interested in some of the photos around the station that had been put up by another ex-Station Officer - Norman Stott. That is when I started to do some research and gather information together, put up a few photos and bits of information at the station and collect any memorabilia. When I finally retired I had a bit more time to follow up information and use the resources at Oldham Local Studies & Archive. There I found the scrapbooks of ex- Police Fireman Ralph Coltman which started me off and met with John and Irene Beever who amongst their many local history projects knew about the early Police Fire Brigade. I met up with some of the old hands and started to take an oral history to preserve in the Local Studies and the Greater Manchester Fire Service Museum at Rochdale for future research.
So I have gathered together some of the information to put on this website and share with interested parties and I hope you like it.
Please email me any comments or information you have at oldhamfirebrigade@hotmail.co.uk.

IRON MEN AND WOODEN LADDERS

I have written a history of Oldham County Borough Fire Brigade from 1807 to 1974 when Local Authority reorganisation forced the amalgamation of small brigades into the metropolitan Greater Manchester Fire Service.

The book has now been published and printed and has now sold out unfortunately although a copy has been deposited with National Libraries of the UK and with Oldham Local Studies.

If you would like to contact me about the book then please email me at oldhamfirebrigade@hotmail.co.uk.
