Our Lady of the Assumption Religious Education Program
Welcome to the Our Lady of the Assumption Religious Education web page! Thank you for your interest in our program. We hope that the information provided below will give you a little insight into what we have to offer! In 2015-2016, we have over 250 children currently receiving their Religious Education here at OLA, and we look forward to welcoming you and your child as well.
At Our Lady of the Assumption, we view religious education as an experience to be shared by your child and all members of our parish community, including parents, families, catechists, and priests. The Catholic Church recognizes that parents are the primary teachers of their children in all matters, including religion. This does not mean parents are expected to know everything about the Catholic Faith. It does mean, however, that our efforts will falter if children do not see in their parents a lived out devotion and faithfulness to our Lord Jesus Christ. Parents have the privileged potential to pass on Catholic values to their children by word and example daily. The Church's formal process to educate children about their Catholic faith through religious education is meant to reaffirm and supplement the Catholic values already lived out at home. Included in this process are education, prayer and the Sacraments.
The goal of Our Lady of the Assumption's Religious Education Program is to see to it that your children are prepared for an authentic Christian life, and grow in both knowledge and grace. Our program is Catholic and our classes reflect a total learning experience composed of lessons, prayer, sacramental preparation, bible study, prayer services and fidelity to the obligation of attendance at Mass on Sundays and Holy Days. Working together with parents, we hope to develop in all the children in our program a deeper knowledge of the Catholic faith and a strong relationship with God.
Our parish provides religious education for public school students from Grade/Level 1 through Grade/Level 8. Children receive First Penance and First Communion in Grade/Level 2. They receive the sacrament of Confirmation in Grade/Level 8. We stress the importance that every child receives a continuous religious education, beginning in the early elementary school years and extending through junior high school. In addition to our grade level classes, we also provide special religious education classes for those older elementary age students who have not yet received Baptism, First Penance and/or First Communion, and high school students who have not yet received Baptism, First Penance, First Communion and/or Confirmation. We also have an inclusion class for special needs children, although this class has a limited availability.
Classes are in session throughout the regular school year, beginning in September and ending in May. Classes meet in the OLA school building, located at 1617 Parkview Ave (corner of Parkview Ave and Middletown Road). Please note that parents are required to make arrangements to get their children to their class sessions -- the Religious Education program does not provide transportation to and from the public schools.
Grades/Levels 1, 2 and 3 meet on Wednesday afternoon from 3:15pm to 4:45pm. Our inclusion/special needs class also meets on Wednesday afternoon, from 3:30pm to 4:45pm. Grades/Levels 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 meet on Wednesday evening from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. Our Sacrament catch-up classes for older children (both elementary and high school) also meet on Wednesday evening, from 6:30pm to 8:00pm.
Our Registration Process:
Children must be registered by a parent/guardian prior to attending religious education classes. Registration forms and student/parent contracts can be obtained at the Religious Education Office, the OLA Rectory or here on the web-site. For new students, a copy of the child's baptismal certificate must be submitted with the completed registration form and contract. Transfer students are always welcome, and must also submit a copy of the child’s baptismal certificate, along with the religious education record from their previous parish.
The annual fee, which is payable at registration and includes all books and materials used during classes, is as follows:
One child: $125
Two children: $150
Three or more children: $175
Note that a special discounted rate is offered during our “Early Bird” registration period, which takes place during the month of May and allows for a savings of $25.00 off the regular fee. Specific dates and times of our early bird registration period are published in the OLA parish bulletin and on our web-site. The regular registration period takes place in September, prior to the start of the Religious education classes. Specific dates and times for the regular registration period are also published in the OLA parish bulletin and on our web-site, once the dates are confirmed.
