BIO
After midnight during Christmastime, 2001, while I listened to after-hours radio host Art Bell, a commercial interrupted his ramblings about UFOs, alien abductions (replete with the always necessary descriptions of anal probings), plus other colorful conspiracy theories. The ad discussed hypnosis training. I caught the toll-free number and—despite the late time—dialed and deposited my voice message on the friendly, automated answering system for the Hypnotherapy Academy of America.
The school turned out to be only 60 miles north of my secluded mountain home. A few days later, a pleasant faculty member called back, at which point I whipped out my VISA and signed up for six months (approximately 350 hours) of hypnotherapy classes. And thus began my intense scrutiny and study of hypnosis.
The subject was not unfamiliar to me however. At age 20, you see, I bore my second child—Eric—while under hypnosis. The OBG/hypnotist told me I’d feel no labor pains, just warm waves caressing my body and by Goddess!—that’s exactly what I felt. (Quite a switch from the 36 hours of agony I endured at Portsmouth Naval Hospital in 1966 when my initial kid, Debby, moseyed out of the womb.) So enamored was I with hypnosis about the time of Eric’s birth that, mimicking my doctor, I proceeded to mesmerize my buddies into somnambulistic spells every chance I got. They loved it and I loved the power and control of entertaining and entrancing them!
A few years later—having discovered another power, that of Transcendental Meditation (TM), I found myself traipsing around the globe in pursuit of cosmic consciousness (and other life-changing goals) vis-a-vis the teachings of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. In fact, on the sunny Atlantic Coast of Spain in 1973, I became a TM teacher when the renowned white-robed monk uttered the sweet, sacred, secret, and super-duper mantras in my ear, after which I returned to the United States where I initiated hundreds of eager learners into the ancient spiritual tradition of the great gurus and Vedic masters, of which Maharishi and TM are a part. I taught TM for a while in the Washington, DC, area, then signed up for grad school at Maryland U, earning in 1981 my Master’s Degree with its emphasis on English education, group dynamics, group communication (especially speaking and listening skills), and creative writing. Over the decades, I taught public school, headed creative writing classes for adults, wrote professionally (and shot photos) for magazines and newspapers (boasting hundreds of published works during my lifetime), studied art part time for four years at the famed Corcoran Gallery in Washington, led support groups for sexual iconoclasts and Tough Love gatherings for the frazzled parents of out-of-control teenagers. I counseled, consulted, lectured, and founded a successful and unique support, social and networking organization—PEP-People Exchanging Power (also geared towards those with colorful sexual proclivities).
Today hypnotherapy fits right in with my people-oriented, help-oriented, and innovative interests. Today I am possessed with a vision—the vision of change and good that hypnosis can provide. As with TM, hypnosis allows a person, naturally and effortlessly, to drift within, toward—as the late Maharishi often said—that “vast reservoir of pure consciousness,” the seat of energy and bliss, activity and thought. From this place, this quiet repose and source of one’s thinking and strength, great possibilities arise: the potential for improved health, for example, and increased energy and love; the release from fear, sorrow, worry, guilt, grief, addiction, procrastination, financial woes, the cycle of obesity; freedom from mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional pain; further liberation from unfulfilled expectations regarding people, places, and things over which one holds no control.
