Edgar L. Bittle of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., passed away Sept. 20, 2010. He was 83 years old. He died at home with his wife by his side.
He was born in New Orleans in 1927 and grew up in Mobile, Ala. Upon graduating high school he enlisted in the Army and was on a troop ship to Europe when Armistice was declared. He took his discharge in Europe and soon started the civil service career of 36 years that culminated in his role as Assistant Deputy for Procurement and Manufacturing at Eglin Air Force Base, from which he retired in 1985.
Ed was active in retirement, serving at various times as Allocations Chairman of the United Way of Okaloosa County, Commander of the Fort Walton Power Squadron, and was a former active member, sometimes successful racer, with the Fort Walton Yacht Club. He was also a Past Master of the Isaac Parker Lodge of Waltham, Mass., and a member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Boston.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Elisabeth Bittle of Fort Walton Beach; son, Michael Bittle of New York; and four granddaughters, Stephanie and Jennifer Stauss, and Heather and Audrey Bittle. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen (Bittle) Stauss of Meredith, N.H.
He was a loving husband and father.
In accordance with his wishes, a private burial at sea will be attended by immediate family. Any memorial donations can be sent to the United Way of Okaloosa County.
