The Department of Orthopaedics in Osmania General Hospital was started as a separate specialty in 1957 by Dr. Mettu Ranga Reddy, FRCS, M.Ch.(Liverpool)It started as a single unit and later the second unit was created in 1970 and PG course was started in 1969-1970 when Dr. Dharma Rai was Professor.With increasing trauma load third unit was created for Trauma in 1987 with Dr. Vootukuri Saidi Reddy as Professor.

    A separate hospital in lines with Sanatorial treatment is situated at Erragadda, in Hyderabad called the TB hospital, which is later renamed as Government General & Chest hospital has got an Orthopaedic wing exclusively for Tuberculosis patients with musculoskeletal lesions. Prof. & HOD Dr. Paravastu Ranga Chari with his team from Osmania General Hospital used to devote every Thursday to visit, examine and operate on TB patients at that hospital. Later on as the patient awareness and Orthopaedic Faculty availability has increased a regular unit, that is 4th unit is created at that hospital (with Dr. P. Jagan Mohan Reddy as the professor)in 1987 and affiliated to Osmania Medical College, Dept. of Orthopaedics. With the changing disease prevalence and the Geographic needs of the population the unit acquired the latest gadgets and now treats all Orthopaedic and Trauma patients and does all procedures including Spine and joint replacement surgeries.
