Welcome!

This is the collaborative design space for a service-learning project facilitated by Designers for Learning, an organization that coordinates volunteer service-learning opportunities for instructional design faculty and students who seek to gain experience creating instruction, training programs, and other types of performance improvement solutions for nonprofits and other social enterprises. The focus of this volunteer service-learning project is the design of open educational resources and instruction for college and career readiness. more >>

Project Description

While the outcome of this project will support the missions of many organizations that offer adult basic education, those participating on this service-learning project are volunteers of Grace Centers of Hope, a faith-based outreach to homeless and disadvantaged individuals and families. Grace Centers of Hope has asked Designers for Learning to facilitate a volunteer service-learning project focused on the design of instructional materials and learning activities to meet the parameters of the College and Career Readiness standards.

Grace Centers of Hope Service-Learning Project Final Week

posted Apr 26, 2014, 12:33 PM by Jennifer Maddrell

With only one week left in our Grace Centers of Hope service-learning pilot, we are now in the final stretch as teams work to complete their deliverables by the May 3rd deadline. Our project manager, Gabrielle Blake, will be working with the Coordinating Designers this week to finalize each team's project. Please touch base if you have any questions, or if you need last minute help or advice.

Also ... as a bit of very exciting news ... we had a 100% hit ratio with our four Association for Educational Communication and Technology (AECT) proposals on service-learning topics, including:
  1. Designing Authentic Educational Experiences through Service-Learning (July Research Symposium)
  2. Service-Learning Workshop with Dr. Jill Stefaniak (Saturday Workshop at November convention - separate registration required)
  3. Examining a Multi-Institution Virtual Service-Learning Collaboration (Panel at November convention)
  4. Multi-Institution Service-learning Project to Design Open Educational Resources for Adult Basic Education (Design & Development Showcase at November convention)

Open Education Events and Resources of Interest

posted Mar 19, 2014, 7:00 AM by Jennifer Maddrell   [ updated Mar 19, 2014, 7:01 AM ]

As teams dig into the design phase of the project, please keep your eyes out for what exists and is happening in the greater Open Education landscape.  As we have mentioned several times during the project, a key goal is to seek out and adapt existing open educational resources (OER) to avoid a reinvention of resources that already exist. In addition, we are seeking ways to present our work in a manner that will be easily accessible to both learners and those who want to use / adapt our efforts. To that end, here are a few events and resources that could be of interest to project team members:
  • Pilot A Design Plan: Pilot A has already aggregated a roster of great OER that they will be mapping to the College and Career Readiness Standards, as well as the GED assessment guidelines ... here is a link to their Design Plan that includes the OER websites they have started to track http://goo.gl/vZf5XM
  • Connexions: The OER content collection at http://cnx.org/contents offers one of many exemplars of how to produce and display OER modules. At the end of this month, the 2014 Connexions conference will be held in Houston, TX with a theme of great relevance to this project. Note the conference theme and their announcement of a new authoring and sharing platform created in partnership with Google:
The conference theme, “Making OER Work,” is an opportunity for faculty, instructional designers, librarians, administrators, students and industry leaders to focus on pragmatic solutions in open education. The conference also marks a new chapter in Connexions, where we plan to unveil the upcoming Connexions authoring and sharing platform, created in partnership with Google, that will make frictionless remix of educational materials a reality.
  • 2014 OpenEd Conference: The Call for Proposals is up for the 2014 OpenEd Conference to be held in Washington DC in November ... see http://openedconference.org/2014/Ronda Dorsey-Neugebauer, a member of Pilot A, will be at the conference. Ronda and I (Jennifer Maddrell) plan to submit a proposal to talk about this pilot project, and the potential for a next phase of OER development for adult basic education. Please let us know if you are interested in joining us at the conference.
  • Your resources: As a reminder, there are several ways you can share information about relevant resources and events, including our Diigo group, our Resource Links, our Discussion Board, or on our Google+ Community. Also, remember to tag any relevant posts on Twitter with the #oerccr hashtag.
