January 2019 Journal club

posted Jan 23, 2019, 6:24 AM by oCUBE Org   [ updated Feb 5, 2019, 1:15 PM ]

This month's meeting will be hosted by Jennifer Peter. We will be discussing  Wyse, S.A., and P.A.G. Soneral. 2018. "Is this class hard?" Defining and analyzing academic rigor from a learner's perspective. CBE-Life Sciences Education 17(4).  doi.org/10.1187/cbe.17-12-0278. Please choose which day and time would suit you best to attend journal club out of the choices offered in the following doodle poll: https://doodle.com/poll/apc86sfbymbc7eyf.
Here are some guiding questions:
1. Do you teach/coordinate (etc.) a course that is known to be 'hard'? What characteristics do you assume give it this reputation? Are these characteristics consistent with what was presented in this article?
2. What obstacles does student-perceived 'rigor' generate for us in our teaching/coordinating (etc)?
3. Is there anything we can do to proactively meet student concerns about course difficulty? And, should we? To what end?
4. What opinion do you have about the study design and analyses used in this article?
If interested members can send their Skype handle (if they have one) or email address to Jennifer Peter (at jwaugh2@uwo.ca), I’ll make sure they get ‘invited’ to the journal club.
