UnConferences to explore topics are most interested in at any given time. Sound interesting?  Join us!

oCUBE is delighted to invite you to the EIGHTH annual (Un)Conference to discuss pedagogical matters in a small group setting in beautiful Muskoka. The (Un)Conference is designed to support a community of practice among people dedicated to an exceptionally satisfying experience of undergraduate biology education. Faculty, staff, graduate students, and administrators interested in biology education are all welcome. Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis (maximum of 35 participants). Twitter hashtag: #oCUBE17.

Our 2017 (Un)Conference will be held Tuesday May 23 to Friday May 26, at Shamrock 
Lodge (see below). oCUBE in general, and the (Un)Conference in particular, are answers to the question, "How can we sustain a vibrant Community of Practice among people determined to improve the quality of experience of undergrad biology education for students and instructors?"

(Un)Conference Registration has two steps:

Step 1. Reservation of accommodation/meals etc. with [WWW]Shamrock Lodge

oCUBE strives to be a community and the ideal (Un)Conference experience is organized to promote this community, with everyone arriving together on Tuesday, joining the Potluck Dinner and staying through Friday morning's '(Un)Conference Reflection and Wrap-up' and Annual General Meeting. We recognize not everyone will be able to attend the entire (Un)Conference, so Shamrock has provided pricing on a daily rate basis:

Single occupancy rate: $225 per adult, plus HST and 15% service charge 
Double occupancy rate: $150 per adult, plus HST and 15% service charge

The above rates include, on a daily basis: 

  • Breakfast, lunch, dinner 

  • Breaks with coffee/tea/snacks 

  • Lakeside accommodation 

  • Conference room and high speed internet (wifi) 

  • Use of lodge facilities (including indoor pool and hot tub) 

  • Scenic boat tour (weather permitting) 

Financial limitations? For senior graduate students/post docs/sessionals without funding who plan on attending, Shamrock will provide one multi-person cabin free-of-charge. The only fee for this option will be to cover meals for $70 per day (plus HST) per person. Individuals under this option will, along with all of the attendees, have access to all of the resort facilities. We encourage you to contact Wendy Keenleyside prior to calling Shamrock ([MAILTO]wkeenley@uoguelph.ca). Note that this multi-person cabin does not afford enough privacy for complete separation of males and females.

Contacting Shamrock Lodge directly will allow you to book your choice of accommodation, declare a preferred room-mate if you have one, and discuss any food-related issues etc. Shamrock has kindly indicated they would be willing to match up individuals wanting double occupancy but not having a preferred room-mate. So, if you want the double occupancy rate, but don't know anyone to room with, just indicate this to the Lodge staff when making your reservation. 

Be sure, when registering, to identify yourself as a witty member of the oCUBE group. A $100 deposit is required when making reservations; there is a $100 cancellation fee up until 2 weeks prior to the UnConference; after that time, the full deposit is retained. This deposit is in lieu of oCUBE paying a conference deposit up front (again, a cost saving measure for all involved).

Step 2. Registration with oCUBE in the spreadsheet. 

This (Un)Conference can accommodate a maximum of 35 people. Please be sure to reserve your accommodation at Shamrock before (or shortly after) adding your name to the registration list. Feel free to use the 'comments' section below to solicit a room-mate for shared accommodation or for carpooling opportunities from others in your region. 

If you have any special accommodations (e.g. food allergies/issues) that need to be attended to during the (Un)Conference, please contact the Registration Coordinator, Wendy Keenleyside ([MAILTO]wkeenley@uoguelph.ca) who will be compiling an official list to be sent to Shamrock Lodge.
