Oswego County New Horizons Band and Chorus

The Oswego New Horizons Band and Chorus began in the late 1990s as the Oswego New Horizons Band.  In October 2008 the chorus was added, and in November 2009 the organization officially became the Oswego County New Horizons Band and Chorus (OCNHB&C).  The OCNHB&C draws members from across Oswego County and several from neighboring Cayuga and Onondaga Counties.  Instrumentalists are seniors 50 years of age or older.  Some members have performed throughout their lives, but most were musicians in their youth who put their musical pursuits aside to work and raise families.  Others have taken up an instrument for the first time or an instrument new to them.

The New Horizons Band program was founded in 1991 by Roy Ernst, a professor at Eastman School of Music in Rochester.  The program, now known as New Horizons International Music Association (NHIMA), consists of over 200 bands, orchestras, and choruses with over 9,000 musicians in Australia, Canada, England, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and the United States.  The OCNHB&C (select Music Groups > New Horizons Groups > New York > New York, Minetto) is a Minetto-based member of NHIMA and an affiliate of Oswego County RSVP.  It is sponsored by Midstate Music.

The 37-member band, which includes strings, and 37-member chorus perform independently and jointly at various area events and adult care facilities.  Band rehearsals are Wednesdays from 9:00-10:30am and chorus rehearsals are Tuesdays from 9:00-10:30am at the Minetto United Methodist Church.  Anyone interested in joining is encouraged to sit in on a rehearsal and talk with members.
