The AKC’s Canine Good Citizen Program is designed to recognize dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The AKC CGC Program provides an excellent foundation for training in other fun activities such as Rally, Obedience, and Agility and results in a well-mannered dog who is a joy to live with. Some therapy dog groups require passing the CGC Test as a prerequisite, some insurance companies recommend CGC training, and an increasing number of apartments and condos are requiring CGC training for resident dogs. Click here for more information.

For the therapy dog test, the dog must be at least one year of age, and handler must bring proof of license, rabies and immunization records. TDI testing must be done in a flat buckle collar or non-restrictive harness. The testing requirements are like CGC with a few more items.  Click here to see what is included in the TDI test.

For dogs who have passed the CGC (and are registered with the AKC-even mixed breeds can register!), the AKC now offers an advanced CGC title: the CGCA. Whereas Canine Good Citizen tests are most often tested in a ring and situations are simulated (e.g., 3 helpers serve as a "crowd"), the AKC Community Canine test is done in real situations including at shows, classes, and in the community.  Click here for more information on the AKC Community Canine Test.
