During the summer last year, I went on a mission trip with my church youth group. We took this mission trip to get a sense of what it was like to live in a community with poverty. We went to a church called The First Church of the Brethren in East Garfield Park, Illinois. There was a secret to this building that we were told when we got there. Martin Luther King Jr. had preached in this very building we were sleeping, eating, and doing everyday things in. He also had an office in this church. Some of us were really interested, and others just said "It's just MLK, why do we need to spend time on this?" I was one that was very interested. This program is called DOOR. It stands for Discovering Opportunities for Outreach and Reflection. There is a huge stained glass window in the church. There is a picture of it on the Advice to Obama page. The person in the bottom right is MLK preaching to children. Everyday, we went out into Chicago and volunteered at places like soup kitchens and shelters for substance abuse. We learned as much from the people we served as they benefited from us. I have never made a website before so I hope you learn from this site as much as I learned making it. Thanks!
