About the Oakridge Optimists

The Optimist Club of Oakridge Acres Inc. was chartered in 1957 and has been a vital part of the Oakridge and London community, providing activities for youth and providing financial support for a wide variety of sport, education, health and safety programs.  We have a proven track record in our community and an active membership of over 40 Optimists who have a common desire to improve the lives of youth in our community.  We have already formed a committee to celebrate our 60th anniversary and Canada's 150th in 2017.

We currently have involvement in the following programs that we support through a variety of fundraising.
  • Baseball and Soccer programs that serve over 2,000 youth
  • Youth Volunteer Recognition Program that will identify and recognize the many young people in our area that volunteer on a regular basis.
  • Legacy program for the upgrading of facilities at the newly renamed Oakridge Optimist Community Park
  • Youth Education programs including two $1000 bursaries to graduating students at Oakridge Secondary and St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary Schools and an oratorical contest for primary school students
  • Child health programs including Children’s’ Hospital, Thames Valley Children’s’ Treatment Centre and  Mid Western Ontario Children’s’ Hospital building fund
  • Disabled youth programs including the London Blizzard Sledge Hockey program, Woodeden Camp and SARI riding academy
  • Youth leadership programs including Boy Scouts, Girl Guides, London Police PEACE program and HOBY

In 2008 we formed a partnership with the Komoka-Kilworth Optimist Club to build a $60,000.00 sledge hockey pad at Woodeden Camp for use by disabled youth.  Sledge hockey has been identified by camp goers as a popular physical and social activity that enables disabled children to compete and be active.

In 2009 we raised funds to purchase 10 "Sleeper Chairs" for Children's Health Foundation for use in child patient rooms at Children's Hospital in London.  These chairs convert to beds to allow a parent to stay with their child while in hospital.

In 2011 we raised funds to support the youth school lunch program at Womens Community House ($12000.00) and the ongoing work at the London Crisis Pregnancy Centre ($8000.00).

Our special fundraising project for 2012 will support donations to the Sunshine Foundation and to Solidarity Experiences Abroad (UWO Speach Pathology project in South Africa).

More recent projects have included support for Women's Community House youth programs and Ronald McDonald House Southwestern Ontario right here in London.

We also continue to support and fund many programs that benefit youth education, health, recreation and safety. You can help the Oakridge Optimist Club support these programs by participating in our events this year which will include Trivia Night in February and our Charity Golf Tournament in September.
