Polio History

      INTRODUCTION

As a project of Nursing History Nova Scotia (NHNS), the following human interest stories have been gathered by members, Edie Bogle and Gloria Stephens, as a reminder of the effect this dreaded disease, polio, had on the lives of so many people. In Canada, hardly anyone thinks about polio now, which is not the case in certain countries. Because of Dr. Salk the disease is just about eradicated here but if  we are not careful and not monitor or have children vaccinated, this disease could raise its ugly head again.

The stories included are Nova Scotia Hospital Polio Clinic 1940; a student’s perspective in treating; personal heart warming stories of Owen Weir; Greta Peppard, plus polio articles and biography of Dr.H.Quigley, Dr. C. Kinley. Hard copies are filed with the NHNS. Included here is information on Maude D. MacLellan, a nurse who worked in the Halifax Polio Clinic

    Maude D. MacLellan

Victoria General Hospital School of Nursing graduate, Maude D. MacLellan, worked in the Halifax Polio Clinic. After graduation she did further studies at University of Toronto in Public Health nursing. She then worked at the Santorum, Kentville. During the polio epidemic of 1942 she studied in Minnesota under Sister Kenny and returned to work at the polio clinic in Halifax with Dr. Cecil Kinley. She traveled with the Cripple Children’s Clinic in NS and was a Public Health Nurse in King’s County until retirement. Maude died June 23, 1995 in the Willow Lodge, Tatamagouche, at the age of 93.
