Scorcher in the Northern Rivers
The Northern NSW Lightning Sprints season finally got underway at Grafton Speedway on the 30th December for the V8 Dirt Modified Christmas cup. It proved a night of challenge for all 9 drivers that made the journey with more than a few twists on results.
The local regulars of Craig Transton 41X, Craig Smith 27X and Michael Hunter 3X welcomed the travelling drivers of Kurt Wilson (A1) and David Kenway 27Q in the north as well as Pete Styles 45N, Danny Stone 47N, Ben Morgan 66N and Dean Eden 99N from the south. Even with the scorching 38 degree day, the atmosphere was brilliant among the guys keen to get out on track. It was an emotional return to the seat for some with Craig Smith in the 27X knowing Dad was looking down for the first time since his passing; Dean Eden returning to the historic #99 for this event and Kurt Wilson returning to seat after months off with an injury.
The show kicked off with Pete Styles taking the honours of carrying the Australian flag for the parade. With Santa strapped on the back and red nose on the front the kids enjoyed the promotion which saw one lucky young fan take home Santa stuffed with lollies.
Heat 1 - 41X of Craig Transton took an early lead over Kurt Wilson, while Pete Styles fought Mick Hunter early for 3rd until mechanical issues ended his charge. First heat race honours went to Transton fighting off hard charger A1 Wilson in second and Litre Sprint veteran Mick Hunter in 3rd. Morgan and Stone continued the fight hard all the way for the third spot but Hunter was not to be denied.
Heat 2 - In a race that surprised everyone who lead it, Morgan took off with Wilson to an early lead before Morgan lost the oil cap pulling infield in a ploom of smoke, and a few laps later Wilson spun bringing the caution. As Wilson went to the rear this left Danny Stone to take the lead but he too subsequently stalled out with a flat battery. Eden in the returning #99 didn't need any further invitation taking the win from A1 Wilson and again the consistent Hunter in 3rd.
Feature Race - While the field was small, the feature race was action packed right from the outset. Wilson was too keen, jumping the start bringing the yellow. As Eden slowed Morgan, Stone and Hunter were all caught out tagging nose to tail and damaging the front wing on the Morgan car. As the field recommenced and settled in, Wilson set a blistering pace at best lap of 13.869 seconds running away to a clear win. Front wing damage left Morgan fighting the car on a very tricky track ultimately forcing him to join Eden (with a broken driveshaft coupler) on the infield. This left Danny Stone in second place and he wasn't going to let that slide. Again consistent Mick Hunter came home to claim the 3rd and final podium spot exclaiming, "not bad for a vintage driver in a vintage car!" Rookie David Kenway from Queensland claimed 4th.
