Prentice Hall Biology

Description:

Biology is a one credit survey course designed to introduce students to the basic concepts and skills associated with the Life Sciences. This course features a learning approach that emphasizes reading, writing and communicating biological concepts. The course emphasizes laboratory experiences to introduce and/or reinforce the classroom instruction.

Schedule of Topics

The syllabus represents a tentative course outline and is subject to change.

Fall Semester

I. Scientific Inquiry and the Nature of Science – Chapters 1 & 2

II. Ecology – Chapters 3 – 6

III. Cell Biology – Chapters 7 – 10

Spring Semester

I. Genetics – Chapters 11 – 14

II. Evolution and Classification – Chapters 15 – 18

Requirements and Expectations

A dedicated notebook for biology class notes and classwork is expected. It is also expected that students will attend class prepared to learn (i.e., bring notebook and pencil/pen).

Class expectations:

  1. Be responsible. It is necessary for the operation and safety of the classroom to act responsibly.
  2. Be courteous and respectful. One person at a time speaks in any discussion or lecture. Do not use vulgarities in the classroom. Include everyone in all activities.
  3. Ask for permission to leave. I am responsible for you all period.
  4. Eat and have drinks elsewhere.
  5. Be in the classroom and prepared to begin lessons when the bell rings.
  6. Do all assigned classwork and homework. It is the key to achieving a passing grade.
  7. NO ELECTRONIC DEVICES

Evaluation:

Grading Procedures/Attendance Policy:

The grading scale is based on the standard 10 point scale.

100 – 90% = A

89 – 80% = B

79 – 70% = C

69 – 60% = D

< 60% = F

Grades are weighted as follows:

Classwork and Labs - 65%

Quizzes - 5%

Exams - 30%

Points earned for homework, lab assignments, classwork, quizzes and exams are cumulative.

Homework Requirements

Homework is assigned at the discretion of the instructor. It is expected that homework will be neatly and thoughtfully completed and turned in at the beginning of the next class period.
