Research Instruments

The project uses both qualitative and quantitative research methods and instruments to collect data. The research design, a mixed-method study, included a quantitative survey of all middle-grades mathematics teachers in the district and student achievement data and a qualitative series of case studies of five middle grades mathematics teachers in two schools with similar demographics. Below are links/descriptions of the data collection instruments.

Quantitative Instruments

Online Administration to 159 middle grades mathematics teachers in March and May 2009
  • The Surveys of Enacted Curriculum K-12 Mathematics - Instructional Practices and Instructional Content Surveys
  • CMP Implementation Survey - Project designed survey focused on teachers' descriptions of their use of CMP aligned to Newark Public Schools Curriculum Pacing Guides for CMP1 and CMP2- see Phaire and Tobias (2010) 
Paper administration to students of the 159 teachers in April, scored by the state
  • 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge grades 6, 7, and 8 mathematics assessments, including student demographic reporting
