The following slate was presented last night, and will be posted on our website for 30 days.  Any additional interested parties may add their name.  We will vote at the next meeting.

    President:       Alyssa Getsey
 1st VP:      Celeste Leyhe
2nd VP:      Emily Simone
  Treasurer:      Renate Thompson
 Secretary:      Andrew Manson

Currently, we have a couple of committee positions open for next year also.  These don't need to be voted in.  Our wonderful Bingo Chair, Andre McGinity, is moving out of the area, so we need to fill that position.  If you are interested or have any questions about it, please don't hesitate to contact her.  I would REALLY like to get this position filled so you can still pick her brain while she's here.  We also usually set the date for the fall bingo before the end of the school year  <jamcginity@hotmail.com>.  I am also looking for someone interested in heading a new committee that will "oversee" all of the after-school programs.  After school programs at our school are VERY popular, and there are so many untapped resources out there.

October 1st, 2013

Good evening, North Springfield Parents!  Tuesday, October 1, is our first PTA meeting of the 2013
2014 school year.  While we usually meet in the library, we need to move due to the Book Fair set up.  The temporary room will be posted by entrance.  Join us for information and refreshments at 7:00 PM.  First timers VERY welcome, and we promise you won't be pressured to head up any committees.

Regarding the Book Fair, there is a change from what was listed in the PTA Newsletter.  The "Preview Days" are this week, October 1, 3, and 4.  This is when the most help is needed, as the children come through the library to create their wish lists.  The actual purchasing will take place next week, October 7-11.  Specific needs for tomorrow are:  1:10 for Mrs. Walton’s 1st grade and 2:40 for Mrs. Fawcett’s K class.  Please contact Ann Miller if you can help out any time:  <greenspring331@yahoo.com>.

Grace Arts is still looking for Docents (presenters) for the following classes:  Schwartz, Goewey, Merriweather, and Thibodeaux.  NO EXPERIENCE IN ART NEEDED!  Really!  Please contact Lisa Milman, if you can cover one of these classes <lgreene128@hotmail.com>.

We hope that you can join us for the meeting.  Our PTA depends on volunteers to thrive.  Find out how you can help!

At the October PTA Meeting, the membership will be voting on the proposed 2013-2014 NSES Draft PTA budget.  Please view a copy of the budget here (posted August 27th, 2013).  For questions about the budget, please contact  Renate Thompson

In an effort to build school spirit all year long, PTA is encouraging the children to celebrate spirit day every Friday.  Each week they should plan to wear their NSES shirt (new or old versions are all great), or any shirt in our school colors – blue and white.  If you would like to purchase NSES t-shirts and car magnets, they will be available from the PTA.  Order forms for t-shirts, sweatshirts, and other items will be sent home from time to as well.

All PTA positions are one-year terms, and each officer may only serve two consecutive one-year terms. Elections are held in May, but the nominating committee begins searching for potential candidates in February. If you think you might be interested in giving back to the school community by serving as an officer or by working on the nominating committee, you are urged to contact someone on the board and to attend a PTA meeting.

Purchase a NSES Magnet!

Show your school spirit!  NSES Magets are now available for purchase  $5.00 per magnet!

September, 2012

Welcome to the North Springfield Elementary School (NSES) PTA Web site. I am Cyndi Brown, PTA president for the 2011-2012 school year.  I am excited about the events and services our committees have planned and look forward to working with the parents, faculty, and staff to make this a great year.

We are a dedicated group of parents and teachers working on committees, in the classrooms, and at after school events, to make your child's elementary school experience a positive one both academically and socially.  We rely solely on volunteers and fundraising - that’s where you come in!  Any amount of time you can give to the PTA is greatly welcomed and appreciated.  Some committees require just minutes a month, while others can provide lengthier opportunities for involvement.  Our events start in September and continue throughout the school year.  Please check the Calendar and Committee pages for more information and to help evaluate where your time and talents are needed.

The PTA generally meets the first Tuesday of every month from 7:00-8:00 PM in the school library.  The first PTA Meeting of this school year will be held on October 4th, 2011 from 7:00-8:00 pm in the school library.  A full listing of dates and times is available on the Calendar.  Please feel free to join us and find out how you and your family can get involved.  We are currently experimenting with some ways to help make meetings more accessible to all families.  Some of the ideas we plan to try are school-aged child care during the meetings and pot-luck dinners.  The calendar will be updated to reflect these special meetings, so please check back often for the latest updates.  If you have any questions, ideas or additional comments, please don’t hesitate to e-mail me .  We look forward to working with you and having a great year!

The Virginia PTA requires local units to review, update, and resubmit their bylaws every five years.  Our bylaws were last reviewd in 2007 and thus are up for review this year.  A bylaws review committee was appointed at the March PTA meeting and presented their recommendations at the April meeting.

The vast majority of the bylaws are model/sample bylaws provided by the state and national PTA organizations. In fact, anything preceeded by a hashmark (#) is mandatory and can not be changed.  Items that we fill in and that are specific to our NSES PTA are highlighted in yellow on the document.  The bylaws committee recommended that there be no changes to those areas (for example: number of meetings, length of term of office, number of vice presidents).

There were a few changes mandated by the state that we thought needed to be brought to members attention as they affect our operations.  These are: the amount of money that can be changed in the budget without a membership vote has been decreased from $500 to $300; the portion of the dues payable to the national organization and the state organization has increased to $2.25 ($1.75) and $1.00 ($0.75) respectively;  more direction is provided to the treasurer about when forms are due to the state offices.

Please take some time to review the current bylaws, available here, and the proposed bylaws, available here.  The membership will be asked to vote to accept the new bylaws at the PTA meeting on May 1, 2012.

Please take a minute to visit the website of the NOVA District PTA.  The mission of the organization is to promote the goals of PTA - supporting and speaking on behalf of children in our schools, helping parents to be effective guardians and role models for their children, and encouraging greater parental involvement at the school level - through the dissemination of information, promotion of legislative participation, and provision of skill development and enhancement to local and council PTAs.
