National Seminar on "Advances in Mathematical Sciences" to commemorate the 128th birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan Iyengar (22nd December, 1887 – 26th April, 1920), FRS, an Indian mathematician and autodidact who, with almost no formal training in pure mathematics, made extraordinary contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions (Wikipedia). The platform of this event is expected to be helpful in promoting and expanding the mathematical legacy of this mathematician brilliant beyond comparison who inspired many great mathematicians.

Biology and medicine, as also the social sciences, which were relatively less attached to advanced Mathematics till a few decades ago, are now benefiting immensely from new mathematical tools. In the last few years the world of finance has turned to higher mathematics for help. The platform of this event will also be used to discuss such timely issues.

Organizers: Assam Academy of Mathematics & Department of Mathematics, Gauhati University.
Venue: Department of Mathematics, Gauhati University, Guwahati-781014, Assam, India.
Date of the Event: 22nd December, 2015

About Department of Mathematics, Gauhati University:
The Department of Mathematics was established in 1948 and started functioning from Cotton College premises. The department was shifted to its present site at Gopinath Bordoloi Nagar, Jalukbari, Guwahati-781014, in the year 1955-56. Prof. V.D. Thawani who was a wrangler of Cambridge University was invited to Head and build up the newly founded post graduate department of Mathematics and Statistics. The statistics department was bifurcated from Mathematics Department in mid-fifties and shifted temporarily to the Physics building in mid-sixties and finally accommodated at its present separate building. Due to relentless efforts and dedication on the part of a galaxy of teachers of the Department, the department grew into a centre of excellence for teaching and research in Mathematics.
