How to setup external USB hard drive as primary storage

Tested on Apple TV 3.0.2
Last Updated on 7/5/2010

Purpose
This page describes how to setup your external USB hard drive as primary storage for iTunes. Instead of using the internal Apple TV hard drive to sync your files to, iTunes will use the the external hard drive.

Requirements
Process

1. Connect via ssh to your AppleTV
ssh frontrow@appletv.local
Enter frontrow as password when prompted.

2. Change the synchronization target
cp -R /mnt/Media/* /mnt/Scratch/Volumes/<name_of_usb_drive>/
Replace <name_of_usb_drive> with the name of your own USB drive. Do not use spaces in the name.
sudo mv /mnt/Media /mnt/Media.org

sudo ln -s /mnt/Scratch/Volumes/<name_of_usb_drive> /mnt/Media
Whenever asked for a password, enter frontrow.

3. Fix file ownerships
sudo chown -h frontrow:frontrow /mnt/Media
sudo chown -R frontrow:frontrow /mnt/Scratch/Volumes/<name_of_usb_drive>

Whenever asked for a password, enter frontrow.

4. Reboot your AppleTV
sudo reboot now
When asked for a password, enter frontrow.

iTunes will now use the external USB drive as available storage. Note: External drive MUST be connected at all times for media syncing and playback as the internal drive will no longer be used.

Reversing the process

1. Connect via ssh to your AppleTV
ssh frontrow@appletv.local

Enter frontrow as password when prompted.

2. Change the synchronization target back to the original target
sudo rm /mnt/Media

sudo mv /mnt/Media.old /mnt/Media
Whenever asked for a password, enter frontrow.

3. Reboot your AppleTV
sudo reboot now
When asked for a password, enter frontrow.

Now iTunes will again use the internal drive as primary storage.
