SASL State Cup Update - Mariners fall in finals to Club Napoli

Over-30 Final: Norwalk Mariners SC 0, Club Napoli SC 2

Both teams were representing the Shoreline Adult Soccer League (SASL).  Here is a report from Jack Testani, CSSA Cup Committee Chairman:

A well played match and two good teams.  CLUB NAPOLI scored in the early minutes with TONY CARTIERA, who took advantage of a loose ball from the goalkeeper RALPH MALLOZZI who actually had made a good save from a shot from CLUB NAPOLI player TED HEALY, but could not secure the ball.  In the 8th minute of the game CLUB NAPOLI  player  DENNIS LUE YAT went down after being tackled and separated his shoulder.  The game was stopped for 35 minutes while waiting for the ambulance.  The game continued with both teams having good chances to score.  In the second half CLUB NAPOLI  scored again with 15 minutes left with TONY CARTIERA.  Again, a very good game.

SASL State Sup Update - Mariners Win Semi-Final

Hello All,

We had two upsets in the CSSA Over-30 State Cup Semi-Finals since both favourites to reach the Final were eliminated!

Danbury United 0, Club Napoli 0 -- after extra time.  Club Napoli won 3-2 on penalty kicks. (at Tunxis Mead, Farmington)

Bristol Italians 2, Norwalk Mariners 3 (at University of Bridgeport, Bridgeport)

These scores have not been confirmed by the CSSA yet.

Danbury United versus Club Napoli was 0-0 after 90 minutes regulation time and the 30 minutes of extra time.  The game still remained tied after the first five penalties and then it went to "sudden death" penalty kicks.   Club Napoli scored their sixth penalty kick, but Danbury United's sixth penalty kick was saved.

In the other semi-final Norwalk Mariners were leading 2-0 at half-time, but Bristol Italians stormed right back, tying the game 2-2 within the first 15 minutes of the second half.  Bristol continued to push and thought they had scored again, but it was disallowed following a close offside call.  The game continued to have drama.  With only 10 minutes remaining the Mariners were awarded a penalty kick, but the Bristol goalkeeper saved it.  With the game in time added on by the referee, and looking like it was going to need 30 minutes of extra time as well, Norwalk Mariners' Rui Fernandes scored the winning goal in the 93rd minute.  It will be the Mariners' first trip to a CSSA final in their 35 year history.

Many thanks to all of the managers who reported!  Both games were clearly exciting and both games probably merited as worthy finals themselves.

The CSSA Over-30 State Cup Final will be Club Napoli versus Norwalk Mariners at a neutral venue to be determined on a date and kick-off time also to be determined.

The CSSA Over-40 State Cup quarter-finals are all scheduled for May 9th (Mothers Day), all having 9:00 AM kick-off times.

Danbury United's USASA Over-30 National Cup game, originally scheduled for May 9th (Mothers Day) has now been moved to Saturday, May 8th, still at the Portuguese Cultural Center in Danbury, kick-off at 5:00 PM.  Their opponents are Westchester Kick (E-NY).

On Sunday March 28, 2010, over 60 family members, friends and teammates honored and celebrated the soccer legacy of Keith Segovia with the retirement of his #15 Norwalk Mariners S.C. uniform.  This is the first time in the 30 year history of the club that a player's uniform number has been retired.
The ceremony was a tribute to Keith the soccer player and teammate.  Keith played the game of soccer with passion, leadership and respect.  He was a competitor and a sportsman.  His presence on the pitch always had an impact on the game, and his absence will also be felt by all.
The Segovia family was presented with Keith's official game jersey, as well his certified SASL players pass and a ball signed by current team members.
