   SPELLING BEE 2016 
   We extend many thanks to our staff for supporting the 2016 Spelling Bee. Donna Turco, Reading Specialist, and Marni Smith, Gr. 3 Teacher, served as judges. Emily Oxnard, Gr. 6 LA and Science, was the announcer. Students in grades 4-8 were eligible to complete. The Northwood School PTA generously covered the registration fee. Over 20 students entered the final challenge. Many students spelled word after word through multiple rounds. 

  BACK TO SCHOOL 2015 -2016 
  The new year began August 27, 2015. Welcome to our new staff members! Prior to the arrival of students, our staff participated in workshops on Response to Intervention and tools available to us to review student data. The goal of these workshops was to improve instruction and academic achievement. 
    Our teachers have also joined many committees. The various committees that are active throughout school are responsible for many essential programs and services that benefit the students and school community.

  December News 
   Emily Oxnard, (center), Northwood Grade 6 Language Arts and Reading Teacher receives national recognition for an outstanding academic program. 
  Louise King (left) and Jen Lenharth (right) worked with other colleagues to nominate Emily Oxnard for a special award with the National Council of Teachers of English. The application process involved recommendations from peers and students. To commemorate Mrs. Oxnard's engaging reading program, she was awarded some funds to choose books for the Grade 6 classroom library. 
    Congratulations Mrs. Oxnard! Thank you for all your efforts on behalf of your students and promoting reading. 
   
October News
NTA Members participated in the Northwood Recreation's Trunk or Treat event held in October. 

Sept 17th  Northwood School Open House BBQ EVENT 
   NTA members were pleased to join with other community partners and support the recent  OPEN HOUSE BBQ EVENT held on Sept. 17th. Hats off to Joe V. (NTA President) and Lauren D. (NTA vice president) for working with the administration and all other community partners to make the event a successful  evening for all. The OPEN HOUSE BBQ was a wonderful opportunity to come together as a community. 
Yoga and Wellness Training

    Beth Benham, our School Nurse, attended the Annual School Nurse Institute at St. Anslem's College during the first week in August. Nurse Benham participated in a wide range of workshops 
focused on student wellness. She also attended refresher courses on assessing and treating pediatric health concerns. During the past school year, Nurse Benham visited many classrooms and led the children in a series of yoga exercises. She expects to continue the Yoga for Classrooms program during the upcoming year and hopes to visit a few new classrooms. Thank you Nurse Benham. 







        

Congratulations 
         Sue Gokey
     The NTA sponsored a celebration on June 16th  to honor Sue Gokey's retirement. This years marks a close to her seven year career as Northwood School's music and band teacher. Students in Mrs. Gokey's music classes developed a great appreciation for performing music in ensembles and becoming proficient in the various elements of musical composition. 
     At the NTA event words of appreciation and gifts were presented to six other staff members who will be leaving our school. Many thanks to Sue D., Jen L., and Margaret F. for organizing the event, gifts, and preparing remarks. 


 

 
Rebecca Rush accepts the 2014 "Ed"ies Award for Excellence in Education at a celebration banquet in Manchester on June 7. Ms. Rush is the NH World Language 
Teacher of the Year.

CLUB SCHEDULE ADDS ENRICHMENT TO STUDENT DAY 

      At this point in the school year, there are a number of student clubs  underway. The clubs generally meet once a week after school. There is a wide range of clubs for students.  Here is a sample of some the clubs being offered at school. Snowshoe club, Math Games club, Fun with Fiction (a book club for grades 1 to 3 ) and Book Club for students in grades 4 -7, Art Club, Yoga Club, Glee Club, and Drama. These activities allows students enjoy learning opportunities in small groups. 



  AUGUST 2015 
 Thank you to the School Board and Community for outfitting our classrooms with SMART boards and projectors. These new digital tools allow for interactive lessons in all subjects. We would also like to extend a thank-you to Mr. Robert for his assistance in this area. 

   100 Books Before Club                                
    Linda Kramas, Retired Grade 1 Northwood Teacher, worked with the Chesley Memorial Public Library to promote early childhood literacy. The kick-off program was held in mid-January 2015.  The program, sponsored by the Chesley Memorial Library with help from the Northwood School Teachers, is open to any child from birth to the start of kindergarten. Registered participants will complete reading logs and be eligible for incentive prizes. The program aims to encourage young children to read 
      When these young children and their families get all the way to 100 books, they will receive a library tote bag and will automatically be entered in the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Club.

 

  Winter 2015 
   A Spelling Bee was held in January. Students in grades 4-8 were eligible to participate. Our Grade 6 winner recently represented Northwood at the state level. Congratulations to Elizabeth Sarno-Hill, Emily Oxnard, and Donna Turco for serving as judges and organizers. Also thank you to the PTA for helping with the registration fees.
