Circa 1962

Begun in 1962 by North Shore performing arts teachers Bruce Mooney,  Bennett Lentczner and Robert Hooban, the Summer Theater Workshop served students for 42 years before being discontinued due to budget cuts.  Concerned parents formed Arts Angels, a booster club for the arts that brought together over 140 alumni, including celebrated actors Michael  McKean and Kate McKinnon, to raise funds for the program's revival in 2013.

Typically producing at least one musical per six-week summer season, the workshop provides high-quality experiences for students who are unable or not permitted to fit dramatics into the schedules during the school year.  In keeping with long tradition, we aim to teach all aspects of theatrical performance, stagecraft and the business of production with all students expected to take on numerous responsibilities on and/or off stage.

Our first workshop, in the summer of 2015, brought theater professionals from the Broadway stages to work with our student performers and crew on two shows, including the musical "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee."  We hope to present the program again in the summer of 2017.
