MEMBER SOTLIGHT:

A Dream Come True

Jordan Simmons

Ever since I was a little kid, I dreamed of owning a Mustang.  New or old, it didn’t matter to me.  My dad, who has been around cars his entire life, instilled this passion in me from the day I was old enough to know what cars were.  It has always been a dream that we have shared and now, live out.

When I was going into my freshman year of high school, my daddy made a deal with me.  He told me if I was in the top ten percent of my graduating class, he would buy me a Mustang to drive to college.  So, of course, I worked my tail off to get the best grades I could to make him proud.  When my junior year was close to wrapping up, I went back to my dad with a different scenario.  At the time, I was sitting number one in my class and I had a proposition to make.  I sat down with my dad and asked him, “What do I get if I graduate as the valedictorian?”  He pondered the idea for a little while, and then asked me what I thought I deserved for such a great achievement.  Without hesitation, I told him I wanted a Shelby.

We discussed the expectations that he had for me and struck up a deal.  He made me promise that I would not quit any of my extracurricular activities I was involved in, and that I must continue to excel in everything I did, not just my school work.  After agreeing on all of the details, one final condition was set: the Shelby, under no circumstances, was going to college with me.  Being my father’s child, I understood fully that this car was something to be appreciated and taken care of in order to keep it all my life.  I agreed and the deal was made.

About halfway through my senior year, it was pretty much known that I would graduate as the valedictorian of my class.  So Daddy and I sat down in front of the computer, looked through every option, and designed one of the most beautiful machines ever made.  He wrote down all of the specs, went to the dealership, and placed the order.  A week before graduation, I came home from hanging out with some friends to find the garage door shut.  A little suspicious as to why they had decided to close me out knowing I was coming home, I waved it off and keyed in the code.  When that door went up, I was speechless.  I literally walked around the car for ten minutes before I could even utter a sound.  Opening that door, sliding into that seat, gripping that steering wheel… I will never forget those moments as long as I live.

My Shelby is the greatest gift I have ever received.  Sharing those moments on the way to shows and going on cruises with Daddy, that’s quality time I appreciate knowing that many girls would die for a common interest with their father. Every second I’m behind that wheel is precious.  Whether I’m cruising down the interstate or hot-rodding through town, there’s always that adrenaline rushing through my veins, feeling that horsepower in every part of me.  The feeling I get when I sit in the driver’s seat and let that clutch out to begin a drive, it’s a feeling like no other.
