Second Ski Club Trip - 1/13/17

posted Jan 11, 2017, 6:18 PM by North Bethesda Ski Club

Few Tips for Week Two - READ THIS WITH YOUR STUDENT

Our first week was VERY successful.  No trips to First Aid.  No safety violations.  Thank you for reminding your student to ski and board safely, and to follow all rules.

Morning Equipment Drop-Off will go much quicker this week, as most bags are already tagged.  Thank you for being patient while waiting in the queue.

Label All Bags With Name and Phone Number, including school backpacks, because they all look alike.  Adding a colored ribbon will also help your student.

Bring your Night Club Card and Money for Dinner.  Lost your NCC?  Head to Group Sales as soon as you arrive to get a new one.  If definitely lost, then call in advance to have one printed (for $25 fee).  If just misplaced for one week, they will give you a one-week temporary pass.

Dress for 30-degree Weather this Friday.  It may even snow up at Liberty while we are there!  (FYI - last week it was in the mid-20's all night).

Remind your student to take their lessons.  They are always better the second week because the student can more accurately describe their skiing/boarding ability to the instructors for proper placement in a class.

Charge phones in advance, or bring a portable charger.  The cold weather robs phones of battery life VERY quickly.  Many kids were shocked when their phone died.
Safety - READ THIS WITH YOUR STUDENT

25 NB Parents will be serving as chaperones for 315 NB students.  Responsibilities for chaperones and students are clearly outlined in the information packet.  Your student is responsible for his/her behavior and safety.  Chaperones serve as guides, not supervisors, throughout the trip - especially once at Liberty Mountain.  Please have a discussion with your child about smart decision-making, for everyone's sake.  Safety is our #1 priority - make sure it's your child's as well.  Thanks!

Ten Decisions Made Every Week by NBMS Ski Club Participants
1. Do I rent skis or a snowboard tonight?
2. Do I take lessons tonight? If yes, at what time?
3. What lifts and runs will I try tonight?
4. Will I use the terrain park tonight?
5. With whom will I ski/board, and what is their ability compared to mine?
6. If my friends want to ski/board on a run that I'm not familiar, what will I do?
7. If I get separated from my friends while on the mountain, what will I do?
8. Will I ski in control or unsafely?
9. Will I drink high-caffeine energy drinks?
10. How will I behave on the bus, in the lodge, and on the mountain?
Not Riding Home on Bus?

If your student is not riding home on the bus from Liberty, your student must provide a written note to his/her Bus' Lead Chaperone.  Absolutely no verbal or email confirmations.  Thank you for your cooperation.
And remind your student.... HAVE FUN!  :)

First Ski Club Trip - 1/6/17

posted Dec 31, 2016, 2:39 PM by North Bethesda Ski Club

First Ski Club Trip On For This Friday, January 6, 2017!

Welcome to ski season!  Please re-read the Ski Club Information Packet (click here to download) to answer most, if not all of your questions.  This e-mail provides some reminders, but does not cover everything.  If you have a question not covered in the packet, please e-mail nbskiclub@gmail.com. We will try to answer within 24 hours.

Want to ski sooner?  Your Night Club Card is valid every night after 4pm (3pm Sundays) starting January 2nd through the end of the season.  Take advantage!
What's Up with Bus Assignments?

Bus assignments are posted outside the NBMS cafeteria.  We will not be posting them online or e-mailing them out to protect student names.  If not already known, please have your student get their bus number this week.  We will also have them at Morning Equipment Drop-Off and Afternoon Bus Loading.  Sorry, no bus changes.
The Skinny on Friday Morning Equipment Drop-Off

Friday morning between 7:15am - 8:15am (sharp) in the lower parking lot by the tennis courts, we will be accepting bags and ski equipment for storage.  Be sure to put your student's name and home/cell phone number on every bag, coat, helmet, and piece of ski equipment - even if you are not putting into storage.

All bags dropped off on Friday morning will be tagged with a colored tag before being put into the storage POD.  When you or your student hands your bags to the volunteer, clearly state the bus number and color.  (If you don't know it, they will look it up).  The bag will be tagged for the season, allowing us to more quickly load/unload in future weeks.  Please cut off last year's tags before Friday.
  • Bus 1 (grade 8) - YELLOW
  • Bus 2 (grade 8/7) - RED
  • Bus 3 (grade 7) - BLUE
  • Bus 4 (grade 7) - GREEN
  • Bus 5 (grade 6/7) - ORANGE
  • Bus 6 (grade 6) - WHITE
Please drive slowly and follow the directions of the volunteers.  Do not get out of your car or park - just keep moving.  Students may bring their ski bags/equipment on the school bus in the morning and drop it off over by the tennis courts too. However, ski club morning equipment drop-off is not a valid excuse to be tardy.

If MCPS has delayed opening, Morning Equipment Drop-Off is delayed as well.
Being Ready to Ski/Board this Friday...

Temps are predicted to be in the 20's.  (Click here for weather).  Be sure to have your student bring appropriate cold-weather gear.  It is always colder there than in Bethesda, so don't let the temps here fool you.  Some suggestions:
  • Appropriate winter/ski clothing - including helmet, heavy coat, gloves, ski goggles, and face mask or bandana (especially if it is windy).
  • A plan for before-school drop-off of equipment/bags.
  • A plan for after-school food/drink.
  • A plan for dinner money while skiing.  Click here to learn about loading money on your student's Night Club Card.
  • A parent-student conversation about decision-making.  See below.
  • A plan to pick-up your student between 11:05-11:15pm on Friday night.  Arrive early for best parking - but don't park in the bus alley.  And don't be late.
  • Hopefully not necessary, but your availability to drive up to Liberty or a hospital in case of medical emergency so that you can drive your student home.

As a reminder, if schools are closed or close early, no ski club.

Lessons are Awesome!

If your student's Night Club Card comes with Lessons, they are at 5:45pm or 7:00pm.  Instructors will be punching their lift tickets with the Liberty Mountain logo to prove they took a lesson.  This allows you to have proof if you need it with the punched ticket.  We highly encourage lessons, especially for beginners.  Perhaps you can create an incentive for your child to take lessons?  We highly encourage them!
Chaperones

25 NB Parents will be serving as chaperones for 315 NB students.  Responsibilities for chaperones and students are clearly outlined in the information packet.  Your student is responsible for his/her behavior and safety.  Chaperones serve as guides, not supervisors, throughout the trip - especially once at Liberty Mountain.  Please have a discussion with your child about smart decision-making, for everyone's sake.  Safety is our #1 priority - make sure it's your child's as well.  Thanks!

Night Club Cards and Helmets

If your student did not pick up his/her Night Club Card or helmet, we will hand it to them on Friday.  If your student forgets his/her Night Club Card, they will have to get in an extra line on Friday that will take at least half an hour.  If your student forgets his/her Helmet, they don't ski/board.  They can rent one for $12.50, but must pay for it with their own cash.  We do not recommend forgetting either.
Not Riding Home on Bus?

If your student is not riding home on the bus from Liberty, your student must provide a written note to his/her Bus' Lead Chaperone.  Absolutely no verbal or email confirmations.  Thank you for your cooperation.
And remind your student.... HAVE FUN!  :)

2017 Ski Club Is Now Full

posted Oct 19, 2016, 7:09 PM by North Bethesda Ski Club   [ updated Oct 20, 2016, 6:31 PM ]

Last night, we had an unprecedented rush to fill the 6 buses of 312 seats.  The system automatically went to a wait list at 7:18 pm so as not to overfill the 'class.'  At that point, every person who registered for the wait list was given a date/time stamp.  We manually enrolled students in order of that date/time stamp this morning until we reached 315 students (3 over our limit, knowing that 2-3 students each year cancel between now and the first trip).  Any person who was officially on the wait list by 7:45pm was enrolled in ski club.

We understand that some people experienced computer issues that may have caused them not to hit the final "submit" button until after 7:45 pm.  However, given that all NBMS parents/students had an equal chance to register on the same system, and we cannot control how the system operates on individual computers, we have to abide by what the system says was the date/time for every student.  This is the most equitable and fair solution.

To give you perspective, last year we planned to fill 5 buses of 265 seats.  However, we had a wait list of 50+ students by 11 am the next morning, so the PTO Leadership made a decision to add a sixth bus for the first time in the Ski Club's decade-plus existence.  In the previous year, we didn't even fill 5 buses, ending at 254 with the last student enrolling sometime in December.  We share this to let you know how unbelievable last night's rush was to us.

Also, we believe we gave fair warning that not every student who wishes to be in ski club would get to be in ski club - in e-mails, in the instructions, and at the information meeting.  We understand that some individuals interpreted this warning differently than others.  And we also understand that work/family/traffic commitments made it impossible for some parents to be at a computer at exactly 7 pm last night.  However, we know of no other way to be fair than to give advance notice to everyone of the registration date/time as we did.

With all that said, we completely understand the frustration/sadness/anger that you and your student may be feeling.  For that, we are truly sorry.  Ski Club is for everyone, and we have always been able to let pretty much everyone get in.  If there is anything to blame, it's the overcrowding at NBMS.  The school population has exploded the last 2 years, and all resources/opportunities are stretched thin, Ski Club included.

Today, the NBMS PTO Leadership Team discussed the pros/cons of adding a 7th bus to accommodate students currently on the wait list.  We have decided that it is not logistically feasible to do so for these reasons:

(1) Based on our experience last year, we barely fit 6 buses into the tennis court parking lot the school lets us use to load students after school.  A 7th bus would have to be on the street for 20+ minutes blocking traffic at the U turn.  This would negatively impact the NBMS and local community.

(2) Based on our experience last year, the morning equipment/bag drop off for 312 students was, what can we say, a little overwhelming to the traffic flow around the school.  Non ski club participants were negatively impacted by the lines of cars and we did everything we could to keep traffic moving fast (as we will again this year).  Adding another 40+ cars to that mix would further negatively impact the NBMS and local community.

 (3) 312 students and 25 chaperones is already a HUGE number of people to bring on one trip.  Going up to 364 and 29 chaperones (nearly 400 people!) is just too much for a volunteer organization such as ours to manage.  It's not about the money (we can pay for it) and it's not about having enough volunteers (people would step up).  It's just too big.  We're already by far the largest school group at Liberty Mountain.

We know what this is not the news you wanted to hear.  And, unfortunately, regardless of the number of people on the wait list (currently 25), we will not be adding a 7th bus for the reasons stated above.  We closed the wait list earlier tonight.

So, what can you do?

(1) Any NBMS Student, Parent, or Sibling may purchase a Night Club Card from Liberty Mountain using the N Bethesda club login.  Just follow the instructions provided.  Purchasing the card, however, does NOT include a seat on the bus, nor any assistance/supervision from NBMS PTO Chaperones.  Parents who choose this option will be responsible for transporting their own student to/from Liberty Mountain and remaining at Liberty Mountain for the entire time.

Again, we are sorry for this situation and wish we had better news.  Thank you for understanding our decision.

Mid-Season Update

posted Feb 25, 2016, 3:46 PM by North Bethesda Ski Club

Just Three Quick Things...
  • No Ski Club This Friday.  Due to MCPS Early Release, we will not be transporting students on Friday, 2/26.  Your student's Night Club Card, however, remains valid every Monday-Saturday after 4pm, and Sunday after 3pm.
  • Final Ski Club on March 4th.  Our last ski club is on Friday, March 4th.  Yes, there is still plenty of cold and snow up at Liberty, so we'll make the most of it.
  • 6th Grade Outdoor Education. Half of the 6th graders will be on Outdoor Ed on Friday next week, arriving back at NBMS at 1:15pm.  Parents must pick up their student at 1:15pm, and then return them to NBMS at 3:00pm for Ski Club.  Unfortunately, there is no supervision available between those two events.
If you have a question, please e-mail nbskiclub@gmail.com. We will try to answer within 24 hours.

Fourth Ski Club Trip - 2/19/16

posted Feb 17, 2016, 3:20 AM by North Bethesda Ski Club

Fourth Ski Club Trip is Friday, February 19, 2016!

We are on for this Friday.  Morning drop-off is 7:15-8:15am.  Buses leave NBMS at 3:20pm.  Pick-up is between 11:05-11:15pm.  Remember to pack food or bring money, dress for the weather, and focus on safety.  If you have a question, please e-mailnbskiclub@gmail.com. We will try to answer within 24 hours.
Speaking of Safety...

Safety is our #1 priority - make sure it's your child's as well.  Last trip we had a few injuries - all occurring in the last hour of the night.  This is when skiers and boarders are most susceptible to injury because of exhaustion.  Remind your student to take breaks, fuel up, and listen to their bodies. If they feel tired, take it easy or head in to the lodge for a rest.  And, as a reminder...

Eleven Decisions Made Every Week by NBMS Ski Club Participants
11. If I'm feeling tired, will I ski hard runs, easy runs, or take a break?
Thank You!

Due to your generosity, the NBMS PTO raised $2,300 for the NBMS Principal's Fund, administered by the school to support/assist needy students at NB to fully participate in academic and extracurricular activities.   In the past three years, we've donated $4,100!

Mid-Season Update

posted Feb 11, 2016, 3:34 PM by North Bethesda Ski Club

Just Three Quick Things...
  • No Ski Club This Friday.  Due to President's Day Weekend, we will not be transporting students on Friday, 2/12.  Your student's Night Club Card, however, remains valid every Monday-Saturday after 4pm, and Sunday after 3pm.
  • Make-Up Dates Scheduled.  We will have two make-up days - Friday, February 19th and Friday, March 4th.  We cannot go on 2/26 because it is an early-release day for MCPS.
  • Night Passes Available. For a donation of $46 per pass, you can ski/board with your student at any of the three resorts.  100% of the proceeds benefit the NBMS Principal's Fund for needy students.  E-mail nbskiclub@gmail.com if interested in securing any passes, which include lift, rental and lesson.

Third Ski Trip Info - 2/5/16

posted Feb 11, 2016, 3:33 PM by North Bethesda Ski Club

YES!  WE ARE GOING SKIING ON FRIDAY!  YAY!

Few reminders:
  • Morning Equipment Drop-Off.  From 7:15-8:15am.  Drive Safely.  Label Everything.
  • After School Bus Ride.  Remember to send some food/drink with your student.  Fueling up BEFORE skiing is important.
  • On the Mountain.  Safety, safety, safety.  Please talk with your student about the decisions they make, especially which runs they will ski/board.  Also, 2 lessons do not make you an expert skier/boarder.  Lessons are an important part of becoming a skilled snow sports athlete.
  • Night Pick-Up.  Please be at NBMS by 11:05pm, ready to pick up your child when they arrive.
If you have a question, please e-mail nbskiclub@gmail.com. We will try to answer within 24 hours.
Make Up Dates Scheduled

For the first time anyone can remember, we had to cancel two dates.  The good news is that we have options for two make-up dates:
  • Friday, February 19 & Friday, March 4
  • The reason we don't go on 2/12 is because of the huge crowds on President's Day Weekend.  We can't go on 2/26 because it is an early release day.
Make a Donation - Get A Night Ski Pass!

The NBMS PTO has 40 one night ski passes valid now through the end of the season.  Each pass gets you a lift ticket, rental, and lesson.  Valid Monday through Saturday 4pm-10pm,  Sunday 3pm-10pm.

For a donation of $46 to the NBMS PTO, we will give you a ticket.  Limit 2 per family.  100% of the donations will be given to the NBMS Principal's Fund administered by the counseling staff to assist needy students at NBMS.

After purchase, we will mail the passes to you within 24 hours.  Click here to donate.

Third Ski Trip Info - 1/29/16

SKI CLUB TRIP ON 1/29/16 CANCELLED DUE TO MCPS SCHOOLS CLOSED
Will we have Ski Club on Friday, January 29th?

It depends.  Here are three scenarios:
  • MCPS schools closed on Friday - no ski club.  If this is the case, we will likely add Friday, March 5th as our second make-up day.
  • MCPS schools open 2 hours late on Friday - yes ski club.  Morning equipment drop off would go from 9:15-10:15am.  If you are unable to make it at that time, remember that students may bring their bags/equipment onto the school buses and walk them over to the PODs.
  • MCPS schools open on-time - yes ski club.  All normal.
Remember - your student's Night Club Card (including any lessons and rentals) are valid Everyday after 4pm (Sundays after 3pm) at Liberty, Roundtop, and Whitetail.  Consider grabbing some kids and heading on up.  The lodge is a great place for parents to hang out while their kids ski and board.

If you have a question, please e-mail nbskiclub@gmail.com. We will try to answer within 24 hours.
We'll be back in touch Thursday night...
