What It Is:Our goal during the 2011-2012 school year is to foster and expand currently existing non-traditional programs at Portland area high schools, and to increase the amount of interest and student participation in career exploration of a non-traditional career.
How It Works
Last fall, PCC hosted the very successful Girl's Day Out and Guy's Day Out career events. Over 100 students participated in these events. In the Spring of 2012 and through the end of the school year we are now seeking to expand on that number and to solidify these programs at the high schools that participated previously, and to begin new programs at high schools that did not participate but have the interest in doing so.
UPCOMING PCC CAREER EVENTS:
We are hosting a series of "Lunch and Learn" career events at PCC campuses based on interest areas. The students will have the opportunity to chat informally with PCC educational advisors, instructors, and current PCC students over lunch. They will also be guided on campus tours to see the facilities related to their career areas. We have the following planned:
APRIL 9 - GIRLS TECHNOLOGY CAREER EVENT. Hosted at SYLVANIA campus from 10am to 2pm.
APRIL 11 (TBD) - BOYS EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION EVENT. Hosted at SYLVANIA campus 10am-2pm.
DATE TBD in APRIL: BOYS NURSING HEALTHCARE. Hosted at SYLVANIA campus.
DATE TBD in APRIL: GIRLS TRADES EVENT (AUTO, CONSTRUCTION, WELDING). Hosted at ROCK CREEK campus.
DATE TBD in APRIL: GIRLS PUBLIC SERVICES EVENT (POLICE, FIRE, EMT). Hosted at CASCADE campus.
Who We’re Looking For:
* Students from all different backgrounds who are interested in exploring nontraditional career options, making connections outside of school and meeting new people.
* Empowering teachers and counselors who would like to increase their nontrad numbers and give their students access to real-world career experiences.
