Hart theme: "this is my boss..."

Home

Each episode began with Max's introduction to the show.  As the music rolled  he introduced us to the Harts in his unique gravely voice. We watched Jonathan and Jennifer  race their cars and  saw scenes from previous episodes.

The  introduction changed after season one, and remained the same throughout the next four seasons, until it changed again  for the movies.

It is interesting to note that there was a longer introduction in the official annual released in 1983

History of the line ...."and when they met it was murder."
Max's introduction changed after season one, where he said that the Hart's HOBBY was murder. Then in seasons two, three, four and five, he said that "and when they met it was murder". Robert Wagner explained why this was changed in a Prodigy chat that he did with Stefanie Powers on November 20, 1995.

One of the Prodigy members asked: "Since the line goes ' when they met it was murder!', would Jonathan have been safe from murder attempts if he had never met Jennifer?"

RJ replied that "you know, I stole that. It was on an advertisement for a film by Billy Wilder, starring Barbara Stanwyk. I always took it to meant that when they met, it was so dynamic, because they fell in love so deeply. When Lionel Stander said that, it sets it up so beautifully; he was the glue that kept us together."

Max's introduction in the 1983  Annual.

"Hi, I'm Max, and I look after the Harts.....which ain't easy as when they met it was MURDER!

Mr Hart, Jonathan, is a self-made millionaire who excels at everything, skiing, driving, deep sea diving, horse riding, racing ... gee, I could go on and on...but let me say that he has the extremely good sense .... and great taste to choose as his wife, the gorgeous Mrs H, Jennifer, a lady who can really take care of herself. Well, actually, that's just as well, because their hobby seems to be MURDER!.

Trouble seems to just follow them, and poor Freeway, that's Mrs Hart's delectable little pooch, and a real pal of mine, and sometimes I have to lead a helping hand... after all, that's' what friends are for isn't it?

Anyway, I must get on as I have to prepare lunch now, just for Freeway and me of course, Mr and Mrs Hart are off detecting as usual.".

 Theme Music

Mark Snow wrote the theme music to Hart to Hart. In an interview on the , ASCP site  he explains how he began to work with Aaron Spelling, and that he doesn't like the Hart theme. He says that when he listens to " things I did before -- like the Hart To Hart theme -- and it's painful! This wah-wahguitar, fours on the bass drum and a disco beat... "

"Now" by the Carpenters

It has been suggested that the lyrics to the Carpenter's song "Now" was based on the Hart theme. This theme is not the one( for the most part)  as the one that starts each episode.   This song was used more as background music for a few of the episodes and the Pilot. If you listen to the melody  and then watch the Pilot or the "London By Night Tour" scene in Two Harts are Better than One (when they met), you'll hear it there.

[Thanks to Deb for the  original information, to Rich for finding the lyrics ]

"Now"

Now, Now when it rains I don't feel cold.
Now that I have your hand to hold,
The winds might blow through me but I don't care.
There's no harm in thunder if you are there.

And now, now when we touch my feelings fly.
Now when I'm smiling I know why.
You light up my world like the morning sun.
You're so deep within me, we're almost one.
And now all the fears that I had start to fade.
I was always afraid love might forget me, love might let me down.
Then look who I found.
[instrumental solo]

The winds might blow through me but I don't care.
There's no harm in thunder if you are there.

And now, now, now when I wake there's someone home.
I'll never face the nights alone.
You gave me the courage I need to win, to open my heart and to let you in.
And I never really knew how, until now, until now.

No, I never really knew how,- until now.
