2017 Anna Grundlach

"I’ve been studying German for over two years at my high school. Last winter, my  teacher gave us the chance to take the National German Exam. My ninety-eighth percentile score set off a chain of events that culminated in my winning a full-ride scholarship for two weeks at a German immersion camp.

And so, last August, I boarded a bus bound for Concordia Language Villages. Understandably, I was a little apprehensive about spending two weeks away from home in a place where they only spoke a language I had learned in school. But it turned out to be amazingly fun and incredibly educational. I was surrounded by German -- every adult spoke German, we learned German songs, even the money was German! There were so many fun camp activities to try -- archery, canoeing, giant chess games. I wasn’t even homesick! Forget homesick, I never wanted to leave!

Of course, I did have to leave. Now that I’m back to my normal life, I’m much more enthusiastic about German language and culture than I used to be. I know that my German summer is something I’m never going to forget, and I’m incredibly thankful to have been given such an awesome experience."

Tschüß!
