I was so glad that I was able to have the opportunity to go on the AATG Summer Study Trip! I stayed in the town of Markkleeberg, just outside of Leipzig, and attended classes at a Gymnasium. With the group and with my host family, I went on fun excursions to places such as Dresden, Meissen, and Berlin. I went on a bike tour around a local lake, visited the zoo, and even celebrated the Fourth of July at the consulate! I was able to learn about history from hundreds of years ago, such as by visiting the church where Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door, to history that happened just in the last few decades, as East Germany fell and Germany was reunified.

Through this trip, I learned how the German language works in everyday life. I became more confident with my abilities and learned important vocabulary that was not discussed in class. I could tell that my listening and speaking improved significantly. The opportunity to live with a host family was amazing, and they helped me understand the culture and history better. I gained a greater appreciation for the culture and grew to be more open to how other people understand the world. I gained more independence and self-confidence though this trip, especially by navigating public transportation and being away from home.

At the end of August, I began college, and the experiences I had on this trip have helped me immensely, from being independent to making friends to being prepared for my German classes. This study trip confirmed that I want to major in and work with German in my future. I have kept in contact with my host family, and I am grateful for all of the relationships I was able to form on this trip. The opportunity to spend three weeks in Germany was life changing and an opportunity I would not have had without the scholarship I received. I am so grateful for the chance I had, and I hope I can help others realize how important learning German is. I can’t wait to visit Markkleeberg, Leipzig, and my host family again.
